One of the finest gaming experiences ever

Having played all but MGS3 I was a little wary that I may have missed a large portion of the story, so i watched several 'retrospective' videos over at gametrailers.com to try and catch up with the story i'd missed. If you haven't played any metal gear games, missed a few or just fancy refreshing the story (believe me, it's quite deep) they are excellent vids and provide the full backstory, highly recommended! Going into the game with a knowlegde of the story, and knowing snake's current circumstances (rapid aging, on the tail of liquid etc) i was expecting a lot - and I got it. The story is like that of a Hollywood blockbuster and the production values are obviously astronomical. Although the cutscenes may be a little long for the casual gamer (one at about half way through the game is approx 60 mins long!) anyone who enjoys an amazing story will love them. To match this, the graphics are mind blowing - the best this console generation by a long shot. It will be a while before they are matched o the same level. From a gameplay perspective, the game plays much like the previous titles, only better. The inventory system is improved, Drebin's weapon shop opens many new doors and allows weapon modification. This proves is a breeze and there are tons of possible combinations which should keep fans interested. The octocam suit allows snake to actively camoflage into his surrounding and makes for some funny easter eggs (look out for the statues early on!) There is enough in this game to keep any gamer entertained even on a 2nd or 3rd play through. There isn't enough space here to explain everythign about the game, and i really have nothign at all bad to say about it. It's been 20 years in the making and snake's final mission proves to be one of the most engrossing, exciting, tense and, surprisingly emotional games ever. This really is a clash between a gaming and cinema experience. In a nutshell, MGS4 is one of the most polished, engrossing, finest gaming experiences ever. If you own a PS3, do yourself a favour and play this game. Highly, highly recommended.
