Good story, but not too well told..

PaulaWestwood from , 6th June, 2007

Before the USA officially joined WW1, several american boys who did not have to do so, bravely (or for a sense of adventure) volunteered for action overseas. This is based on the true exploits of one of these groups. Therefore, though similar things have been comitted to film before, its not a bad reprise of a theme and the story does make this a worthwhile watch. Having said the above, and though the film is 'good', it does have a real spread on with a trowel 'boys own' comic feel about it, this is even taking into account the different etiquette and machinery of war in 1917 being very different than today. The air battle scenes look a bit like CGI from 10 years ago, and the general action and play of the film feels somehow contrived. It all lacks something 'gripping' to take it from just good to excellent. So there is nothing really new to see, but the story is worthwhile and scrapes a recommendation for that alone.

choc full of cheese

BunnyDees from from bristol, 3rd November, 2007

The pilots are the usual collection of US war film stereotypes. The moody one, the black one, the racist one who sees the error of his ways, the cowardly one who redeems himself etc. They do a lot of that saluting thing to each other when the music gets syrupy. They fly CGI planes from a video game. You can keep yourself amused ( well, not really ) by guessing exactly what will happen next. Absolute tripe.

MUSH

MC from Leicster, 24th October, 2007

Over the top meaningless mush, total garbage set to mellow dramatic string lines with a dialogue written on Steven Hawkings Mr spell machine. That pretty much sums it up.

A very bad film

A Customer from Bromley, 8th November, 2007

Historically inaccurate, poor script, badly acted. What is a terrific true story deserves better treatment than it received from this film. Avoid this like the plague.

Enjoyable action film

A Customer from OXON, 7th January, 2008

The Americans won the 1st World War - didn't you know that? If you can ignore the historical inaccuracies and obvious special effects, this film is actually quite good. Story of a pilot breaking the rules, going his own way, winning the girl, beating the Baron - it's Top Gun in canvas bi-planes in other words...
