mixed feelings- but good film

A Customer from Cambridge, 18th November, 2009

a good film but I have mixed feeleings as I'm not sure how much of it is a true reflection of what really happened. great though to be reminded of those days. Peter taylor never did get the full recognition back then. Don't think you need to be a football fan to enjoy this film , but as I am I can't really say that for sure. think the story stands up without the football side.

Excellent

A definite must for all footie fans out there. This is a brilliant portrayal of a young Cloughie, showing how it all began and the mistakes he made as a young manager. Unfortunately, as the title suggests, it focuses mainly on his short tenure at Leeds (with a lot of background build up from when he was at Derby) and it left you wanting a bit more, especially considering what he went on to achieve in his managerial career.

the Enigma that is Cloughie

fredericky from , 15th November, 2009

Enjoyed this film as much as the book, but also pleased the film took on its own life. Acting was excellent and Michael Sheen does a wonderful job, as do many of the other supporting actors. its a pity the family wrote this one off, as Cloughie although portrayed as a complex character also comes across with many positives attributes. The film succeeds in capturing this unique era and this unique personality.

Damned

A much better film than i had imagined it to be. Although there was a lot of stuff left out ,which would have told the complete story. But a very good film about the greatest england manager that never was. It didn't capture the true Brian Clough.

The good old days. eh ?

A Customer from Barnsley, 12th November, 2009

Have read the book, now seen the film.......and enjoyed both immensely ! Areally good representation of 1970s football, with all the grit, simplicity, naivety & downright hard Northern feel. Superb acting by the leads, Messrs Michael Sheen, Timothy Spall, Colm Meany and Jim Broadbent as Clough, Taylor, Revie & Mr Chairman. Was a little bit unsure about the way that the Leeds team were portrayed but it all fitted into a very enjoyable film.

Enjoyed this !

I really enjoyed this film, the portrayal of Clough is excellent by mr sheen and only let down by the awful use of Chesterfields ground for the baseball ground - dont know why CGI wasnt employed more in this film?? The Leeds actors are unfortunately stereotypical of this day & ages perception of the game back in the 70's and dont even remotely resemble their counterparts - that said a good trip into a long lost past.

You don't know what you're doing!

David Peace's extraordinary novel 'The Damned United' waded into the story of Brian Clough's ill-fated 44-day spell as manager of Leeds United with fists flying. Clough was portrayed as a teary, sweary, bleary boozer who hated the Leeds players as much as they hated him. It was so hard hitting that, just before the film based on the book was due for release, the Clough family sponsored a documentary of their own to tell their side of the story. Did I just say this film was 'based on the book'? If it was, the screenplay must have been adapted by Enid Blyton. Who knows, it may well be a more accurate depiction of 'what really happened' than the book ever was, but it's not nearly as interesting or enjoyable. It's about as much fun as a floodlight failure during an Accrington Stanley Reserves game on a wet January night. Avoid the film. Read the book.

quite good

Well acted but very dissapointed with aspects of the story line, having recently seen the actual interview with Clough and Revie the film adaption was nothing like the real thing. I can understand why the Clough family were unhappy with this book/film. Michael Sheen made this watchable.
