Nearly gave up on this 45 minutes in but decided to stick with it. I am glad I did. Not for the faint-hearted at the start but well worth watching, despite all the hype this was a good film and one not to be missed.
DVD subtitles are not accessible

Poor rating is not to do with the film but to do with the subtitles. During part of the film the actors speak Hindi and the English subtitles are embedded in the film screen. They are small text, often low contrast and appear in different parts of the screen, forcing the view to search the screen to find them. The standard English subtitles for the 'hard of hearing' are presented as normal at the bottom of the screen in large letters, usually with high contrast. Someone who needs the subtitles to follow the plot does not have to search the screen to find them. Unfortunately the makers of the DVD did not consider people who have vision impairments and need large, clear subtitles for translations. The hard of hearing subtitles do not include the translations from Hindi - these are left embedded in the film screen and therefore inaccessible to someone who does not have perfect vision. And that includes the millions of older people with forms of macular degeneration. Why were they so shortsighted?

Don't believe the HYPE

I like the idea of this movie. I really like the idea of it. But the movie falls a bit short in acting, storyline and pacing. At times the acting was, well, a bit bad. The child actors where great and I could totally believe them. The pacing was slow and I didn't always care about the characters - which isn't great considering the story line and the setting. The cinematography was grand a times with some great shots.Don't believe the hype - it's not the best movie in years. It's OK.

Very well crafted film. Good storyline and the film captured the essence of Mumbai. Not quite the 'feel good' movie I was expecting - in fact the scenes about the children's lives were quite upsetting. Central characters all well cast. The film deserved the accolades that it received
