pretty boy soldiers
afterglow from from Brighton, 29th August, 2008
well it starts off great with the conflict scenes gritty, horrific and well shot and acted, but on their return to american life the casting of these pretty boys shows in the lack of serious acting talent needed to show the emotions of these shellshocked soldiers. But worth watching if you want to see Channing Tatum writhing around in a mud pit in tight pants!

This must came on top of my list of depressing, hopeless films to watch. It highlights the senselessness of wars and in particular the so called 'war in Iraq'. The film, first of all covers a very depressing topic: the soldiers that are sent to Iraq that supposedly are property of the US government, seeing as they have no say when they are called back into service after they have finished with the army.(this is called stop loss and hence the title of the movie). If you are a soldier in this position, you either have to go back and fight 'the war' (if you want to call it that)or go AWOL and disappear (this means leaving the USA and taking on a new identity). It looks at the effect of how being in Iraq affects these young guys and how little support the Government offers these guys after they have done their stint in 'serving their country'. It seems such a shame that young, promising lives are cut short through the ravages of war not just physically but emotionally too. They are treated no better than slaves or convicts, as they certainly have no freedom to decide what to do with their own lives. There is such a simple solution to this problem. I can't believe the thousands of pounds/dollars spent on overcrowded jails set up to offer criminals and offenders a comfortable stay, when in reality THESE people would best be suited to be fighting these ugly wars in the name of their country (interpretation: on behalf of a few greedy politician out to make a quick buck). Let's face it, criminals (I am talking repeat offenders here like paedophiles, rapist, killers etc...) are known not to have a very good rehabilitation record (hence 'repeat offenders' and the reasons why prisons are jam packed and not working), so they are the best canditates to be soldiers and hopefully that will free up valuable jail space for offenders that have a chance at rehabilitation. It's a win win situation for all concerned, I cannot believe the idea has never occurred to our hopeless governements!
Very good
