So he's pleasantly surprised when he meets Marie (Juliette Binoche) at a bookstore when he goes to his parents' Rhode Island home for the annual family reunion. But his joy is short-lived when he discovers that she is dating his brother (Dane Cook), forcing Dan to hide his feelings and chemistry with Marie.

Vile and sisnister movie

Lunar from , 16th June, 2008

A guy tries to steal his brother's girlfriend, whilst all his family is having a get together. Hmm, lovely! Tries to be cute about it, whilst ticking off all the boxes of what a 'cute' film should do, but there's naer a good performance to be seen and the whole thing just made me feel genuinely uncomfortable.

A real feel good movie!

A Customer from SW London, 15th January, 2008

I quite enjoyed this film, despite finding Carell very irritating.( He seems to only ever know how to act as one persona) It 's your typical feel good movie, a bit OTT in places but good to watch once. In a nutshell, it's the difficulties a widowed dad of three girls faces when his younger brother brings home a much older woman who happens to be Dan's (widowed dad's/Carell's) ideal woman. Will or won't they end up together? You'll have to watch the film to find out, but it shouldn't be too hard to figure out!

Quite entertaining

PaulaWestwood from , 28th January, 2008

Not typical Steve Carrell for me, he plays a charachter who is a little mour dour and unfunny than his usual portrayals. Thats not to say this has no humour at all, it is funny in places and funny-sad in others, but in general this is a much heavier movie than I expected. I expected something a but fun and fluffy, but this tackles the break up/relationship scenario a tad more seriously. Juliette Binoche is perfect (as always) though and adds an extra dimension that this film would have lacked without herthere. As really does the underrated (to me) Dane Cook. All in all not as much a giggle as I expected, but definately worth a watch.

Sickly, turgid crap!

A Customer from Glasgow, 18th March, 2010

Well okay, that was perhaps slightly over the top, but do families really live like that? With such a good cast I was hoping for so much more. Do yourself a favour and rent something else.

Dan in Real Life

This is a really good feel good film - just my type of film. It had everything - sadness, laughter, love and real family values. I haven't laughed so much for ages at a film at one particular part. More like this please!

Warm, funny and fuzzy

Duzzbob from , 30th December, 2009

I find Steve Carell to be a bit hit and miss, so I wasn't sure what to expect when I first saw Dan in Real Life. I say 'first saw' because since the first viewing it has been one of those films in my collection that I watch on a regular basis, as it continues to make me laugh and leaves a warm glow. I know some people will find it too sickly sweet but I think the balance is just right and the awkward situations Dan finds himself in whilst falling in love with his brothers new girlfriend (Juliette Binoche) during a long family get together are brilliantly written and acted. Highly recommended to put a smile on your face.
