An unforgettable celebration of love, loss and new beginnings, Les Chansons d'Amour is a joyful homage to the French New Wave and Jacques Demy's classic The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Louis Garrel plays Ismael, a young man at the centre of a ménage-a-trois with his long-time girlfriend Julie (Ludivine Sagnier) and his work colleague Alice (Clotilde Hesme). But Ismael is feeling restless and Julie confides in her sister (Chiara Mastroianni) that she is unhappy with the situation; shortly after, fate intervenes and profoundly changes the destinies of all concerned. Beautifully photographed on the streets of Paris and featuring songs by acclaimed musician Alex Beaupain - brilliantly sung by the cast - Christophe Honoré's beguiling film is a vibrant tale of longing and romance.

A typically French new wave film in love with Paris

A Customer from UK, 23rd April, 2008

This is a film for a younger fans who may live in the world where sexual and personal morals are much freer than the world as known and experienced by older generations. The 3 protagonists enjoy a relationship a trois [2 girls/1 boy] which develops into a lesbian arrangement and then after the death of one girl, the boy tries a homosexual arrangement. The film is typically French and is hightened with a wide selection of musical melodies accompanying scenes of Paris which is the major setting of all the action.
At it's best, it tries to show that love can be expressed in many different ways, but this may not be acceptable to many older people film buffs

not like les parapluies

A Customer from Chatham, 30th June, 2008

I rented this because the description said it was like the classic Les parapluies de Cherbourg. Well, it was in 2 ways: 1, it was French. 2, there was singing. apart from that - not good - not bad. but don't rent if you are expecting something spectacular.

not the best

misspoppy from from Manchester, 10th October, 2008

strange strange film. quite an interesting premise at first but the bursting into song just kills it. after about 40 minutes was bored and uncomfortable, wondering when the next song would break out.

Je suis beau, jeune et Breton

A Customer from London, 18th February, 2010

Dark-ish and sombre yet ultimately uplifting. Some naff songs but some beautiful moments too. Definitely worth watching (particularly if you love Louis Garrel, Les Parapluies de Cherbourg or general music theatre/film). I went on to buy it which is a rare occurrence!

Please don't dismiss youth too easily

jesssproxmill from , 22nd November, 2009

I came to this expecting to hate it, but I was charmed. The musical element is elegantly understated in a Cabrel sort of way, Paris is effortlessly beautiful in the way only Paris can be, and the feelings expressed throughout are raw and real, if a little immature and romantic. Only the French could pull this one off, and I would watch it again, if just for the very last line.

Very good

Randomfilmbuff from , 19th October, 2009

I loved this film and think is good example of french new wave cinema. the portrayal of relationships was spot on. I am no fan of musicals but it seemed to work as the songs were underplayed which meant they remained part of the story line. This of course has subtitles so anyone who refuses to watch such films this is one to avoid

Unexpected Musical

thejenbug from , 4th May, 2009

I like musicals but only when the tunes are catchy and help explain the story. I've got to admit that the singing in this film was a bit unexpected and a bit awkward to watch. Might be useful whe you're learning French because you can hear the words clearer than French films where the speaking is really fast.
