should have been so much better...

This film had the potential to be so much more than the finnished picture.. It is slow from the start and then just as it starts building up it slows right down again. A good cast and well acted but unfortunatly does not have anything new and origianl to offer.

Very good!

I had missed 'The Brave One' at the cinema, which annoyed me as I usually like Jodie Foster's films (with a few exceptions *cough Flightplan cough*). The film is well put together and Foster is great as New York radio DJ Erica Bain. We learn from the beginning that she loves her city and everythings going well in her life. Until that is, she and her boyfriend (LOST's Naveen Andrews) are brutally attacked during a night time stroll through the city she loves. She finds herself not recognising the places she once felt safe in, and when the New York cops don't seem to be getting anywhere with their investigation into her attack, Erica deicdes to seek revenge for herself - ultimately not recognising herself and the things she is capable of. I believe, although I'm not 100% sure, that this is set in pre Rudy Guilliani New York. The streets can be a violent and scarey place, and this is certainly shown, especially in the brutal attack scene. The film steers clear of the usual New York glamorous shots of Empire State and Times Square, instead showing the real-life gritty side of more suburban districts. Although the concept of a woman going out on a revenge spree may be a little far fetched, The Brave One is gripping and manages to be believable from start to finish. Some fine acting from Foster harks back to her Silence of the Lambs days, I'm pretty sure you'll be rooting for her right up to the gripping end. I highly reccommend renting this one!!

The victim of a gang beating and Rape Jodie Foster Takes to the streets of New York carrying her tape recorder which was the famous signature of her radio talk show by taking in the sounds of the streets of New York, only the streets and the sounds are much different now than her care free life before everything she cared about in life was taken from her. Unable to mourn the death of her fiance and unable to feel herself once again. In fear she buys an automatic Pistol initially for self defence but gradually this turns to self defence and then in anger by lashing out at the people who threaten her defined space. She knows that what she has done is wrong but cannot begin to atone until she has found some sort of justice for what has been done to her. There a rough synopsis, but you can watch the movie several times and see something different in it each time. There are some intense scenes and some pensive action but it is one of those films that you cannot put in a single slot. The beginning sums up the film in some ways. You see this couple planning to get married and the walk in Central park where the Boyfriend is killed and Foster is so badly beaten she is in a coma for 3 weeks. But during the E.R. scene you get to see the before and after. The physical scarring along with the mental scarring that goes with it. You have to empathise with the Foster character and understand what it is like to be a victim of violent crime to understand its psychological implications. Agoraphobia is the first barrier to cross and is partly addressed in the movie as she makes her transition to home life once again. The film works on several levels as a drama, as a Thriller and as a cop caper if you may. The music was good but was eerily like Alanis Morissette's Univited in City of Angels.

The Brave One

Utter gash. Immediately following her fiance's violent death, Jodie Foster goes from not knowing how to load a gun, to top assassin. Totally unbelievable storyline with some seriously dodgy acting. Poor at best.

The Good One!

ParkerLou from West Midlands, 14th July, 2009

Jodie Foster doesn't go far wrong with films, and this one is no exception. I thoroughly enjoyed this, though its plot is bleak and the acting gritty and thought provoking. That said, its relatively easy to watch, its brutal at times but without being bloodthirsty and gory. Hard hitting, mentally rather than visually. Soundtrack is fab too. Well worth a watch.
