I had missed 'The Brave One' at the cinema, which annoyed me as I usually like Jodie Foster's films (with a few exceptions *cough Flightplan cough*). The film is well put together and Foster is great as New York radio DJ Erica Bain. We learn from the beginning that she loves her city and everythings going well in her life. Until that is, she and her boyfriend (LOST's Naveen Andrews) are brutally attacked during a night time stroll through the city she loves. She finds herself not recognising the places she once felt safe in, and when the New York cops don't seem to be getting anywhere with their investigation into her attack, Erica deicdes to seek revenge for herself - ultimately not recognising herself and the things she is capable of. I believe, although I'm not 100% sure, that this is set in pre Rudy Guilliani New York. The streets can be a violent and scarey place, and this is certainly shown, especially in the brutal attack scene. The film steers clear of the usual New York glamorous shots of Empire State and Times Square, instead showing the real-life gritty side of more suburban districts. Although the concept of a woman going out on a revenge spree may be a little far fetched, The Brave One is gripping and manages to be believable from start to finish. Some fine acting from Foster harks back to her Silence of the Lambs days, I'm pretty sure you'll be rooting for her right up to the gripping end. I highly reccommend renting this one!!
