Ryan (Troy Gentile), Wade (Nate Hartley) and Emmit (David Dorfman) attend their first day at high school and they're pumped... until they meet up with Filkins (Alex Frost), a school bully who comes off like a little Hannibal Lecter.

Before they become completely engulfed in Filkins' reign of terror, they seek out some protection by placing an ad in the Soldier of Fortune magazine. Their best response - and the cheapest - comes from Drillbit Taylor (Owen Wilson), a down-on-his luck soldier of fortune who lives a homeless - he likes to say 'home-free' - existence on the beach.

Drillbit

ValleyJohn from , 31st March, 2008

I hate it when it’s the school Holidays . There is a hardly any good films to go and see at the cinema unless you are under 15 years old .I found myself with a spare afternoon so i took a trip to the local Multiplex and the choice of films were : 10,000 BC , 27 Dresses , Codename : The Cleaner , Hanah Montana , Horton Hears a Who , The Game Plan , Meet the Spartans and DrillBit Taylor . None of these appealed to me so i decided to go for a Comedy in Drillbit Taylor just because i knew very little about it.
I wish i had done some homework before i made my choice!

It all begins on the first day of high school, when a trio of anxious freshmen , Ryan (Troy Gentile), Wade (Nate Hartley) and tag-along, Emmit (David Dorfman), become the instant target of the school’s senior psycho-in-residence, Filkins (Alex Frost), the ultimate school bully , (who must be at least 22 years old!) . As what they were hoping to be the best years of their lives are suddenly turned into a daily living hell, the boys realize they have only one choice , to hire their own personal bodyguard.

Enter Drillbit Taylor (Owen Wilson), not the best but definitely the cheapest of the mercenaries, hit men and bodyguards who answer their online ad.
Drillbit is steely, dangerous and skilled in covert black-ops and exotic martial arts. He’s also a complete fraud.
He bluffs and cajoles the credulous trio through his cockamamie boot camp and, after several unfunny missteps, instills in them new skills and some much needed confidence. But when push comes to shove , and more tedious pushing and shoving , Drillbit seems to be no match for Filkins’ reign of terror ( Yawn ) . Now it’s up to Ryan, Wade and Emmit to transform this down-and-out drifter into the savior he originally promised to be.

Let me get straight to the point . Drillbit Taylor is bloody awful . It’s unfunny , it badly acted and it’s ridiculous in bad way not a Superbad way , of which this film desperately tries to be. Even the characters look the same as in Superbad . One short , fat curly haired Jewish kid . One Skinny kid and a geeky wacky off the wall kid who is always with the other two despite them not wanting him around. Where as Superbad made me laugh a lot i never laughed once during this despite Seth Rogan being credited a writer . This is not Superbad ..........it’s Just Bad.

I’m still to be convince that Owen Wilson is a comedy actor . His acting ability is not in question but is he funny ?. I don’t Think so.
It does not help when the script is awful and that nothing remotely funny happens but he picks the films to star in so he’s partly to blame .

I can normally forgive a comedy for being far fetched as sometimes they have to be to be funny , but in this case it just adds to the film being a complete Turkey .
It was reported last year that Owen Wilson had tried to take his life due to him splitting up with his girlfriend. I think the real reason is that he was making this movie at the time and had just realised his mistake!

This is one of the worst movies i have seen in a long time . It was that bad that i was desperately wishing i was in the next screen room watching Horton hears a Who!

Not too bad, just a tad samey..

PaulaWestwood from , 31st March, 2008

We all knew kids at school who needed looking after, but none of them went as far as hiring a minder. The three new interns in this flick are grade 'A' cannon fodder geeks for any prowling bully and immediately come to the attention of Filkins (more than adequately played by a pretty menacing Alex Frost). Rather than surrender to what looks like beong a lifetime of highschool misery, they club together to hire a minder... after all everyone else seems to have them in the U.S. these days anyway. Enter Owen Wilson, the down and out, inept and rather lacking in bouncer potential (but cheap !) minder. But as always in farce, things arent quite as simple as that, and lead to some pretty funny moments. It isnt the best or funniest movie ever made buy young Troy Gentile as Ryan comes from a great line up of movies Good Luck Chuck, Tenacious D and Nacho Libre, and I can see a huge future for him, he definately has a way to get the laughs across. All in all it doesnt pull up any trees as a comedy, and is pretty samey, but not the worst hour and a half I've had in the cinema.

Typical Owen Wilson film

Davey1989 from from London, 11th April, 2008

When you look at the Owen Wilson film collection, films such as Shanghai Noon, You, me and Dupree, Wedding Crashers etc, what do you notice? That all of the characters he plays, are exactly the same, and this is no different where he plays Drillbit Taylor. A typical story line, 3 friends start their high school careers hoping that it would be the best time of their life. However this thought soon starts to fade at a gathering pace as they are very quickly picked on by 2 school bullies. They decide that rather than take the crap they are getting for the rest of the year, they decide to enlist the help of a professional bodyguard. Que Drillbit Taylor. He's not the best, not the most professional, but he is the cheapest that they can afford. The films young actors are the ones that really steal the show, even though Owen Wilson is the one billed to headline it. Troy Gentile who plays 'T-Dogg' as he nicknames himself brings some very comedic moments throughout and never gets boring. Alex Frost has come a long way since his performance in Elephant and really looked the part as the bully, and really had a mischievous look in his eye throughout, which really added to the character. As a comedy, there weren't exactly a lot of funny bits in it, in fact the laughter is very few and far between. However there are a few laugh out loud moments, but none that will really stick in your mind which is a good sign of a comedy. The script was poorly written. Simple as. The storyline bordered on ridiculous, and not in a good way. The film was written by Seth Rogan, and this was very apparent, as the film had a very similar look to it as Superbad and even has pretty much the same characters. In fact it looks like they ran out of ideas on what the main characters should look like, so instead just the stole the idea he already came up with on Superbad, but just taking away about 6 years to make them look 12. There are also numerous plot holes throughout, such as everyone seems to not notice the kid with the black eye, and no parents doing anything about a bleeding nose after he had been punched. All of which is just there to remind you that this is just a film and nothing more. I would not say that this film is a complete 'Don't go and see', I think it would go down well with a younger audience, or if you were going to see it with a group of friends. But I wouldn't raise my hopes to seeing a great comedy. If you liked Wedding Crashers then go check it out.

Not as smart or as good as it could have been

VIDEOMONSTER from , 14th February, 2010

This film starts off with a great premise, get a bum to be a bodyguard. Unfortunately it never truly succeeds. It goes into cliche with Wilson's title character eventually doing the right thing. That said there are some brilliant laughs the last 10-15 minutes are gold, but there is a lot waiting around for those few minutes of hernias, which makes this comedy misfire. The performances are decent but nothing worth writing about, and overall it's a bit of limp biscuit promising much but delivering little satisfaction. One to rent rather than buy.

Owen Wilson does it again! He's one of my favourite comedians and he does not back down here. Very funny comedy with a sweet storyline. I found it very entertaining from start to finish along with a great ending. Great acting from the cast. Well worth a watch :)
