Over 90 minutes of cut scenes !!! wake me up when they are over ZZZzzz

A Customer from Hersh, 11th June, 2008

This game has over '90' MINUTES OF CUT SCENES !!!! Ughh I could not imagine having to have to sit all through that whilst doing NOTHING, I hope there is a skip button, the trouble with MGS 4 is that it has been around since the PS1 and revamped again and again under various names and all that made it special has now been done in so many other games, I think a lot of people will be disappointed ........

Amazing!!!!!

TroyMc from from Eastbourne, 10th April, 2008

This is to be the finally to the incredible series that is Metal Gear and Metal Gear 4 is no exception to the rule and does not disappoint, new and brilliant features include; - Adaptive camouflage (your camo suit or , OctoCamo, now has the ability to adapt it's self to your surrounding environment e.g. stand next to a wallpapered wall and your camo turns that pattern sweet!) - The formidable CQC of Metal Gear has been improved and has introduced new chokes, hold up techniques ext. - The Solid Eye is a new piece of equipment added to Snakes arsenal (it as any hard core Metal Gear fan knows is there so replace his eye that Ocelot shot out) this Solid Eye Patch scans the battle field in any way with thermal vision, night vision and binoculars. - Interactive environment e.g. you can clime in Dust bins or clime in an oil drum (oil drum replaces the concept of the card board box e.g. get in it walk around, sneak up on enemies and now even roll it at enemies with you inside like a human bowling ball Ober Sweet) - All this along with a huge new amount of weapons, gadgets, environments and enemies Brief story line: Snake’s bionic clock is running out and he has been given one last mission to assassinate Liquid Ocelot will he finish his mission before it to late we will have to wait and see!?

Different...

thedancecommander from , 26th February, 2010

Whilst the game does attempt to hold true to the format of the previous games, it feels much different. The game doesn't seem as much to be 'tactical espionage action' and the fact that you can simply buy any weapon and silence it was, for me, disappointing. This was the only of the games where a suppressed Socom was not equipped for the majority of the game. Some of the cutscenes were also a bit far-fetched and why wouldn't Raiden die, I ask? Furthermore, the recovery system in MGS3 where you performed emergency aid on yourself; sealing wounds with cigars, putting your leg in a splint, etc. worked very well and was overlooked this time. However, the game was still thoroughly enjoyable and riddled with fond memories of the previous games. The gameplay was very good and the story, as always, intricate. Overall, I'm glad I played it and I do not think that it is so far removed from the MGS franchise that it can be classed as a different game. I highly recommend it.

Metal Gear AWESOME

ThyphixTheGrumphog from , 24th February, 2010

Very epic and compelling, despite the introduction of 'Old Snake' (A play on Solid Snake) which initially put me off, I was pleasantly blown away by the graphics, story and extra unlockables making this game (Dare I say it) replayable. I didnt even mind playing as Old Snake since if you beat final bosses with the Tranq gun you unlock additional 'Faces' Either way heres the lowdown: THE GOOD - The part of this game that had me on my knees with praise was a particular level which had an incredible '1960's Detective feel' which I could play again and again. Perfect level. - Incredible addition to the Metal Gear series, its best to have played the previous games - Over the shoulder and relistic stealth situations allows for immersive gameplay - Extra unlockables give you something to work for - The story has a... *Coughs* sorry not used to this... a wonderfully fulfilling final boss AND ending. - I could go on THE BAD - Some story elements can get repetetive througout and progression remains similar to some bosses from previous games - Without knowledge from previous games most story elements can be confusing - You have to watch the credits to watch the final ending... small price to pay though Overall I give it 99%, and 5 star recommend it, I beg you to rent it and would advise you to buy it!

Above average but no longer great

NeilSBUK from , 14th February, 2010

I'm reviewing this game in February 2010, so it's been a while since its release. It still holds up as a reasonable action game, but when compared to more recent titles like Uncharted 2, it falls flat. There are a lot of good things in this game like the characters and story, the graphics are excellent, and the gameplay is generally above average, but I wouldn't say it was excellent. The issues I encountered were: Too much video and not enough gameplay. You can skip some of these videos if you want to, but watching them helps to follow the story. I can understand having some video, but sometimes they go on for about half an hour at a time. Poor controls - It took me a while to tweak the control options to get the scheme I wanted, but even then some functions such as weapon zooming are really cumbersome. Character's reaction to getting hit - sometimes you get hit and you fall over and are helpless to do anything for a few seconds. It is especially difficult to avoid ending up in this situation when using the weapon zoom function. Some annoying bosses - One of the bosses I encountered required me to read a codec entry before I could beat it, even though I knew the method to use. I repeated the method over and over until I realised that the only reason my character wasn't doing what I wanted, was because I hadn't asked what to do first. Just note that checking the codec is necessary if you need help. Although the graphics are excellent, they are very dull. Sometimes it would have been nice to have more vibrant environments. I often found myself ignoring the stealthy gameplay and just running through the levels shooting enemies and avoiding larger foes. The problem with this approach was that the game doesn't work very well as a shooter. It is possible that for stealth it is much more enjoyable, although I was hardly ever tempted to hide and work my way through the shadows. Given the hype around this game I was disappointed with it, even given that it has aged a bit now. I think by today's standards, it is only above average, and if you are looking for a great action game, you should probably look elsewhere, such as Uncharted 2 or Assassin's Creed 2.
