This horror story stars George C. Scott as a music teacher who loses his family in a car accident and moves to Seattle in hopes of starting a new life in a grand old mansion. Radio Times

A satisfying twist on an old staple, the haunted house movie. George C Scott is a recently widowed composer who moves into an old house in Seattle (played by Vancouver) run by the local historic society. Before long, the house starts croaking, juddering and generally behaving badly. With the help of local historian Trish Van Devere (Scott's then real-life wife), a century-old murder is discovered; there are further shocks in store, all neatly handled by Hungarian-born director Peter Medak, who sensibly refuses to let the special effects get the upper hand.

Imitation is the best form of flattery.

The Dawn Riser from Penicuik, Scotland., 11th October, 2004

I was a little bit disapointed with this movie as there were obvious copycat moments (particularly at the movies opening) borrowed/stolen from the far superior, The Haunting, released in 1963. Rent the afore mentioned movie for sure, and leave The Changeling, unless your bored and have nothing better to watch.

Genuinely creepy!

AndyandClaire from Beds, 14th May, 2006

I first saw this one friday night at about the age of 13 or 14 when BBC2 used to show the Hammer horror-type films at midnight. It freaked me out a bit then and it's creepiness is still potent even today. I genuinely recommend this film to anyone who is looking for that great horror thrill from when you were younger and that you just don't get with today's "horror"/"scary" films.

A charming film with a chill

Simmy from West Yorkshire, 17th February, 2004

A classic example of good filmmaking and substance above style. It's a classic ghost story but the ghost is not the bad guy. GCS is a recently bereaved music teacher and composer who rents a large old house with a history of its own. His loss is such that whatever is in the house (I won't give it away) reaches out for his help. It's one of those gems you come across when you are not expecting them. This film deserves much wider appreciation than it's had.

dated and cheesy

ustwo from from ilkley, 28th February, 2010

my review of this film is probably clouded by the fact that i rented this by mistake when i should have been renting 'Changeling' - oops! my mistake! Having said that I settled down to watch it with an open mind but did not really enjoy it. There are too many moments designed to make you jump, proper cheesy ghost story stuff. The plot was a bit contrived too. If you like a good ghost story and a bit of a scare it's ok but it's a bit 80's and I'm sure better (ie more scary) films have been made since. A widower moves into an enormous house in overgrown grounds - oh come on, surely he's asking to be haunted!

A Classic Never Diies

peteleedsuk from , 18th January, 2010

I love the classic horror films, the music and general atmoshere builds the suspense even more and this is no exception to that. Personal pain and anguish drive the main character to move to a new area and a new house. All is not as it seems, fantastic film, highly recommend.

I remember watching this back in the 80's when I was a nipper! I enjoyed it then and I enjoyed it this time around as well. Great storyline from start to finish. Definitely recommended!
