The Empire is being held to ransom by the Barbarians. On the eve of the coronation of the 12-year-old Romulus Augustus, his mentor, the shaman Ambrosinus (Ben Kingsley), predicts disaster. His worst fears are realised as the Goths sack the once-great city of Rome and capture the last Emperor and his protector. They are imprisoned on the historic island of Capri, where Romulus is destined to discover the mythical sword of Cæsar that holds the prophecy -

'One edge to defend, one to defeat; In Britannia
was I forged... to fit the hand of he... who is destined to rule.'

One legionnaire survives to escort his Emperor to safety - the boy's loyal bodyguard, Aurelius (Colin Firth). Aided by a mysterious black-clad Byzantine warrior (Aishwarya Rai) and Ambrosinus' strategic cunning, Aurelius frees Romulus only to face betrayal and a fight for their lives. With the world against them, their only course of action is to reach the one legion loyal to Rome. They face a perilous trek across a continent to Britain in search of The Last Legion. There, a new myth - destined to span the centuries - is waiting to rise.

Not really foradult audiences but fun

jennifer claire from Ireland, 20th October, 2007

I would have like dthis better if I were 12 and not 42, I think, but this retelling of the Arthurian legend, set in ancient Rome, is quite suitable for the sprogs, unless they are very young or very squeamish. Firth is probably miscast- his 'rousing' speech at the end sounds more like a frustrated school teacher trying to get the class to buck up its ideas- but the action is non-stop and the child star is good. If only they had left off those last five minutes it would have been a better film all around.

SEE ACTORS YOU THOUGHT COULD ACT WELL ACT VERY BADLY

WWWBOARDUMBCOM from , 13th March, 2008

Colin Firth a hard warrior? Thomas Sangster a boy emp?
A kids film? An epic journey? Even kids found this boring. Trying to be a cheap Lord of the Rings it's funny the actors did this film they must be desperate for cash or dumb, very dumb. Colin Firth should quite acting. The trouble is you've got to get this just to witness how bad it is, it is not even fun

Watch it to the end

wnbartlett from , 11th February, 2008

One of the very weakest films you'll see for some time! It's action packed with a British cast that seems to have come from 'Love Actually' but it would have fared better with Americans. If you are over 7 or 8 you're going to be disappointed but watch it to the end. You'd be hard pressed to make anything as funny as the journey over the alps to sunny Britannica and then on to Hadrians Wall and the Nineth legion disguised as locals.

This is a children's movie really. A good one for nine-year olds with plastic swords.

Or the latest B movie? Couldn't help the idea Colin Firth should have stuck to Jane Austen & Ben Kingsley Ghandi; terribly miscast in this film, one attempting to play Gladiator & the other Gandalf, it just didn't work. The plot is appallingly far fetched, sort of worked for a while and gradually fell into farce. All that said, we actually enjoyed the film, with some good action scenes & effects, - if what you want is general entertainment. Don't expect an epic though, or anything like a serious historical rendition; this is too juvenile. Watch it with tongue in cheek for a lazy night in, or for laughs as well as action, and you'll win.

Hideous..... Could not keep me awake - Colin Firth should stick to English comedy genre instead of attempting serious acting...Could not take him serious as a sort of hard man!!! Sorry to be so negative - but I always watch to the end of a movie - but this was too painful.
