A good Woody Allen movie... at last

A Customer from LONDON, 8th February, 2009

The once genius Woody Allen has very much gone off the boil lately, so expectations are low as the credits roll. The unreal upper crust London setting does not bode well. Looking thru the cast list you know you're going to be battered with wooden accents. So far, so noughties Woody. Scarlet Johannen plays the role woody would have played had he been 30 years younger - and she makes a very good go of it. Woody himself appears - always a good sign - and plays, well Danny Rose.. The plot is incidental, you're here for the wit and sillliness of the good old woody movies - and this has it in spades. To me the sandra / sidney characters are a replay of the keaton/allen pairing of Love and Death - some of the scenes are so reminiscent of the meeting with the count & countessa. This isn't 1970's woody allen, but it has many moments which come very close. If you can watch it for the jokes rather than looking for a tightly plotted murder mystery then you'll enjoy it. He does have a very misguided perception of England and London in particular, but this is played on in the film, so you kinda forgive it. It's a slight, caper movie, with some great jokes in it, nothing more - at last!

Why Is This Great Film Taking So Long To Reach The UK?

schumi2 from , 30th March, 2009

Having bought the DVD from America (as a fan of the sublime talents of Scarlett), I cannot believe this is taking so long to arrive on region 2. Filmed in 2006, what is going on? Its a shame because having also seen it twice again on cable in Thailand it just becomes more and more enjoyable. I don't know whether I liked the humour or the plot more...probably the humour. Woody himself is excellent playing a really bad card-trick magician, saying to people 'I love you, Bless you, I love your race' at every opportunity. Theres no doubt the comedy actually turns out better than the plot, which will keep you watching, and is at times, very suspenseful. It has the bonus of a great start and a hilarious ending and I would recommed this film to anyone for a thoroughly enjoyable night in with a bag of popcorn.
