Alain Moreau is a singer who has been playing the provincial dance hall circuit for many years, with his ex-wife managing his career. One night, he meets Marion, a young, attractive but troubled woman, trying to rebuild her life with her son, after a failed marriage. It results in a night of passion, Marion soon regrets it but it leaves Alain quite enamoured. In trying to win back her affection, they soon realise how much they are alike and share a tentative bond that evidently brings them closer together.

Oh so French!

A Customer from Milton Keynes, 18th March, 2008

I was not sure what to expect, the songs/lyrics were like another character in the film, the acting was great, it was oh so very French but I have to say I was enthralled.

I enjoyed this film. The main focus in the film is the attention given to the lyrics. Gerard Depardieu remarks that although his 'ageing' fan club still adore him, he sings the lyrics for himself, as others don't seem to notice them! I loved the lyrics, they were like poetry in motion that came alive when he fell in love with the lovely blonde girl. (still unsure of her name!)

The Singer - Subtitled - Quintesstially French - too slow and aimless!

A Customer from Wales, 16th April, 2008

If you like French films, with distracting subtitles (that loose both the moment and divert you from the essential body language of a film) you MAY enjoy this slow, essentially dull and ‘we have seen it all before, but better’ film. Alain (Depardieu), an ageing singer/lothario, meets a young ‘sexy’ blonde Marion (Cecile de France) and a night of passion turns into a pursuit by Alain, and initial regret by Marion. Both have ‘baggage’, but Marion’s shallow character is a product of poor direction, and her past somewhat left to the imagination. Alain is the focus that overshadows a true development of all the central characters, who, if they had more prominence would have overcome some of the lethargy of this ‘Depardieu’ fan-clubbish film - if you love Depardieu, you will like the film. If NOT, do not bother - it is HARD WORK - without any reward for your endurance!!

Nothing happens but somehow you keep watching.....

Mr D has put on weight, and it serves him well in this slight tale of a lounge singer who only performs at tea dances these days. Managed by his ex-wife, who is about to remarry, the lounge singer comes across an enigmatic woman and the attraction is soon mutual - but whilst he continues to pursue, she keeps walking away. A love story of sorts about how you don't get old in your head, only in body.

The tape rolled for too long

FromHereToThere from , 29th December, 2009

Well it started okay and then just took longer and longer to tell a story that I have seen over and over again. One night passion, slow love scenes, hard luck and then the ending that leaves you tired and thinking why they didn't hurry up. Nope very average if you ask me.

poignant and real

what all women know about their men as they get older is to be generous- in this film, we see an older man being generous in that way too toward a younger woman who treats him as he must once have treated women himself - sort of dismissively. we reach out to him; he knows his powers and he accepts it about himself. it is at the same time a joyous film, and the young woman he comes to love is absolutely spot on as an actress and as an object of his affection. wonderful
