A well-made police thriller which follows a Scotland Yard Detective Superintendent as he finds links between a recent robbery from a safe in a London office building and other similar crimes over the past two years. In every instance the make of the safe was the same.

Policing the old fashioned way.

This is a great film and I had been waiting years for it to finally appear in the rental lists. Like a lot of the classics it has languished in the wish list for months. Jack Hawkins gives a great performance as the Police officer in charge of this intriguing case. He is well supported by a top list of British 1950's character actors with a familiar face in every scene. The story is a cracking yarn about safes! But I'm not going to spoil it for you by divulging the plot details here. If you want some classic Ealing for an enjoyable evening then this is a good choice. Great cast, Great Story and Great production.

Although the sound had to be turned fully up to be able to hear the dialogue, the film was watchable and a very good story. Jack Hawkins usually did make films worth watching.

Classic British

A Customer from Brigg, 13th March, 2010

Brilliantly plotted and paced british 'procedural' crime film. I was engrossed from start to finish as the story unfolded. In the day when nonsense human emotions didn't get in the way of a good story!

An excellent British police thriller with Jack Hawkins and a (mostly) very strong cast. The plot is a clever concept though it does include the obligatory supportive wife (of Jack Hawkins) and somewhat neglected child (due to pressure of his work). A clear exposition of the methodical and painstaking methods used to track down a clever criminal (plus of course some brilliant intuition!).
