An icon of the 20th century, famed for films such as Hairspray, Serial Mom, Pink Flamingos, Cry Baby and Polyester, This Filthy World is John Waters one-man show, a "vaudeville" act that celebrates the film career and tastes of the man William Burroughs once called "The Pope of Trash". Focusing in on Waters' early negative artistic influences and his fascination with true crime, exploitation films, fashion lunacy, and the extremes of the contemporary art world, this joyously devious monologue elevates all that is trashy in life into a call to arms to "filth followers" everywhere.

Welcome to John's filthy world

Anybody who has ever been to one of Waters' talks will know what to expect from this hilarious talk about his career to date. He talks about his films, the charcters he has worked with in them and some of his obsessions; from trash cinema to bizarre sexual practices. The director keeps the camera trained on Waters,.interspersed with just a few brief cut-aways to the audience. The pace of Waters delivery and his wonderful stories ensure that boredom never sets in. Terrific and very very funny.

Normally I can't say I'm a big fan of stand up comedy, but this is a stand up performance with a difference. An amusing 87 minutes, which doesn't drop pace for a second, John Waters will leave you shocked & appalled in the most delightful way, as only he can.

Definitely not watered down

Waters has made some of the most appalling (in the nicest way possible) masterpieces of the last fifty years, and is fiercely proud of his title as the Grandaddy of Trash. I find Waters' work superbly entertaining, and seeing the cogs whirring behind the filth machine is a brilliant thing. His stories grate sometimes and they become quite repetitive, but his manner is always engaging if a little irritating (then again, isn't that the point of John Waters?) and his stories often tickle the palette (and are intensely graphic, as one would expect.) The most disturbing aspect of his stage show is his pencil moustache. My only gripe is his sarcastic asides often felt a little forced and unnatural. Then again, what about Waters IS natural? A very entertaining hour and a half.

Master of filth

A Customer from London, 29th December, 2008

I've loved John Water's films for years, and even met Divine on one occasion, but I've never seen the guy himself, so this was a new and highly amusing experience. he looks very sick and clean, in his trendy jacket (Vivienne Westcott) and narrow pants, but has no inhibitions when it comes to tlaking dirty. The show is probably better seen live, but I found it informative and entertaining.

This Filthy World

The best part of this dvd was the question and answer part with the audiance. This was very entertaining and fun. John Waters surprised me as he is a very confident speaker and could have been an actor in his own films I think.
