"We Are Marshall" tells an inspiring true story set in Huntingdon, West Virginia, a small town steeped in the rich tradition of college football. For decades, players, coaches, fans and families have come together to cheer on Marshall University's "Thunder Herd." For this team and this community, Marshall football is more than just a sport, it's a way of life. But on a fateful night in 1970, while traveling back to Huntingdon after a game in North Carolina, 75 members of Marshall's football team and coaching staff were killed in a plane crash. As those left behind struggled to cope with the devastating loss of their loved ones, the grieving families found hope and strength in the leadership of Jack Lengyel (Matthew McConaughey), a young coach who was determined to rebuild Marshall's football program and, in the process, helped to heal a community.

Thunder Herd

This is a really great film. I think the movie has captured the real sense of how this tragic accident affected this town and it was dealt with very well. A good movie well worth watching. You don’t need any prior knowledge of American football but it do’s help.

An interesting glimpse into the American way of life!

I'm a sucker for true stories. I found it interesting to watch this movie, because a town is torn apart when their football team all die in a plane crash, and initially the public outcry is to not to play the game altogether due to the tragedy. Which I found rather silly, seeing as football as just a game and nothing more: however this is not so much a movie about football as a movie about choosing life and the healing process that should be about choosing life despite it's inevitable tragedies. A moving story, with superb acting and and an uplifting message!

this was very emotional throughout, the fact that it was a true story emphasised this even more so. how so many lives were taken in such tragic circumstances. found this to be very warm and fulfilling, had a sense of true community about it. may have been a little long but thats really its only flaw. aside from that it was a decent enough tribute

We Are Marshall (2006)

Inspirational true story, the kind of thing Hollywood does so well, which tells the tragic tale of a West Virginia college devastated by the loss of its football team in a horrendous air crash. Months later, a new coach (Matthew McConaughey) is assigned to develop an alternate team composed mainly of freshmen, only to face seemingly insurmountable obstacles, not least the inability of some staff members to overcome the guilt and horror of the tragedy they have encountered. Director McG had an inauspicious start to his career with the godawful 'Charlie's Angels' movies, but this one demonstrates a flair for character and heartfelt drama, helped enormously by a talented cast (including Matthew Fox, Ian McShane and David Strathairn). And while the narrative builds to a climactic football game designed to make or break McConaughey's newly-established team, the screenplay carefully emphasizes the people at the heart of the drama rather than cornball 'feel-good' win-at-all-costs sentimentality. Some scenes are heartbreakingly sad, others are truly inspirational, and it all comes across as honest and moving in equal measure. Aspect ratio: 2.35:1 (Super 35).

I love any film about sport and if it is true, so much the better. The loss of almost the whole football team of a provincial City leaves a huge void ion a local community and then. against the odds a maverick coach offers to recruit and run a new team. Not only is the team new but the college principal gets a one off dispensation to play freshmen; some thing never done before. The coach has to win over not only the team members but also the local community. An enthralling story

Good because it was a true story, but not so great without knowing this fact. The one thing I did enjoy was then ending which wasn't too American smultz!
