Thumbs...down?

Treadstone from , 5th November, 2007

It was always going to be a tough call doing a remake of this movie, particularly given Rutger Hauers amazing performance. However Sean Bean does do the role justice as the unknown entity that is the 'Hitcher' or John Ryder as he calls himself. Two young lovers embark on a trip cross country and on a stormy, wet night, they very nearly run down a lone figure standing next to his broken down vehicle, in the rain, thumbing a lift. Sensibly, they decide to leave him to it and carry on, only to run into this menacing chap at a garage futher on. Feeling awkward about leaving him behind, they decide to give him a lift...it all goes down hill from there. The suspense built up nicely during the flim and the it had just about the right amount of jumpy bits you expect in this genre. The one thing that let it down, was the ending. Anyone who has seen the horror movie, Vacancy, will know what I mean. Its the girl who plucks up the courage to finally do what she should have done several scenes ago, that is, shoot the baddy. At the end I was left asking myself 'is that it?'. Also some questionable moments, such as when John Ryder took out an entire police force, this gave the movie that all too familiar far fetched feel to it. I would give the movie a 2.5 if I could, but I really struggled to give this a 3/5 and a 2 may be too harsh. Nice in HD.

Deja Vu

A Customer from Sussex, England, 2nd November, 2007

I realsie that re-makes are all the rage - and to his credit Michael Bay has done some interesting stuff remaking (in a producer capacity) horror household names - I personally enjoyed his take on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre... This however felt like it had borrowed everything from every other film in it's genre, so much so that I could swear I'd seen it before? If you are a fan of this type of movie you wont be disappointed (there are the kids in danger and several suitably jumpy moments) but it felt very 'by numbers' in my opinion (I do realise this isn't oscar material!)... That said it wasn't the worst way to spend an hour and twenty minutes - and I do have to give kudos to Sean Bean - he makes a very convincing baddie... enjoy! (on the plus side High Definition rocks people need this in their lives!)
