Faithful to the conventions of the World War II genre, Mostow's (BREAKDOWN) submarine thriller pays earnest homage to the pluck and determination of ordinary people forced to overcome extraordinary odds. The mostly young and inexperienced crew of the S-33 is deployed on a top secret, high-priority mission to intercept a disabled German u-boat (the titular U-571) and capture the ship's encryption system--the Enigma--in order to crack the Nazi's communication codes and hasten an allied victory in the North Atlantic. Racing against a German rescue effort, the S-33 stages a daring raid on the U-571. But after capturing the U-571, the Americans find themselves its prisoner as they must pilot the leaky, disabled vessel through hostile enemy waters. McConaughey (EDTV, DAZED AND CONFUSED) leads a strong cast (Keitel - HOLY SMOKE, Paxton - A SIMPLE PLAN) in this fast-paced, tense, submarine adventure.

Inaccurate

KatiMark from , 10th April, 2008

This film falsely claims that the Americans, rather than the British, captured a vital Enigma machine. Americans trying to rewrite history through the big screen once again. For what it was, it was watchable but unfortunately the historical value was inexistent.

Good, but fantasy

poopypants99 from , 15th May, 2008

The film is well written and produced, but implies that it is a true story....... The basic story is true, but as another reviewer commented, the british captured the Enigma, not the Americans. If you dont mind being fed lies and propaganda, and just want to be entertained, get the film. However, this left a sour taste in my mouth because I have read the truth. and it is REALLY annoying how the USA try to hi-jack the valour and courage of the Royal Navy in order to make themselves look like heroes. Good film, if it was honest.

Eye Candy

A Customer from Scotland, 9th September, 2008

This is a good action film. It looks beautiful in Blu-Ray and if you have the sound system it will have you bouncing out your seat when the explosions go off. Add to that this is full screen and you have a treat for the senses. If it wasn't for the fact that this is a total fabrication of the truth and I was less patriotic, I wouldn't hesitate to give it four stars.

Worth renting

Good film and certainly worth renting. Had seen this before and still enjoyed it, some really good scenes and suspense and part of our history as it is a true story.

U-571 - BLU-RAY Version

A Customer from Scarborough, 1st January, 2009

I thought 'U-571' was so earnest it was campy. (Maybe I'm just guilty of treason?) Whatever the case, while I can't recommend this film, this is such a great looking and sounding Blu-ray release that it earns a recommendation purely as demo material. Universal's decision to repurpose the making-of material found on past releases into a new picture-in-picture commentary may be debatable, but at least the studio is exploiting the Blu-ray format for its interactive capabilities. If you want some great high-def eye and ear candy, 'U-571' is your disc.

Get over it!!

A Customer from Manchester, 19th November, 2008

This was a good film and it does not take away the fact that the British discovered the Enigma Machine, why do British people get so upset over the Yanks Participation in the War. This film shows how good the Germans were actually at deceiving the British navy. It shows how complex the machine was and why it was so important to capture it. Dont forget if America did not get involve in the war we would have lost. But good film overall.
