Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant) is a cynical and self-deprecating former '80s pop idol who turns down an offer to appear on a reality TV show for has-beens. Instead, he chooses to play the far more dignified nostalgia circuit, and hires the lovely but deeply insecure Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore) to water his plants while he’s away. When Alex is tasked with writing a song for pop starlet Cora (Haley Bennett) in just four days, Sophie reveals herself to be a gifted songwriter and they end up making beautiful music together. Despite this contrived set-up, the film, to its credit, deftly avoids many possible rom-com clichés in favour of organic, character-driven conflicts and comedic situations. As Alex and Sophie fall in love, their relationship begins to mirror the song writing process; they grapple with their creative differences and emotional hang-ups, all the while dealing with the pressures of the music industry. The two leads (aided by great supporting turns from Brad Garrett and Kristen Johnston) manage to pull all this off with a lightness of touch that makes the characters' vulnerability appealing rather than pathetic.

An Overlooked Gem

MovieSteve from , 20th April, 2008

Music and Lyrics is a curious 'little' film, it marries two of the most proficient Rom Com actors of the modern day era in a charming tale that doesn't take itself too seriously. Many would judge Hugh Grant's performance as stereotypical 'Hugh Grant', however this is by no means a criticism as he is to Rom Coms what Tom Hanks was 15 years ago, witty and above all well timed. In much the same way Drew Barrymore delights with her trademark cooky style and the chemistry between the characters is at times electric. There are more than a few laugh out loud moments courtesy of the slick script and accomplished cast and these are set against a plausible plotline that flows along at a lively pace. Apart from the script and performances the other star of the movie is undoubtedly the soundtrack. From the pitch perfect 80's pseudo videos to the Bollywood inspired ramblings of Cora we are taken on wild ride culminating in the deeply satisfying 'Way Back into Love', the song penned by the fledgling lovers. Like all good Rom Coms you leave with a smile on your face, warm glow in your heart and in this instance a bonus, some very memorable tunes that might send you in search of a Soundtrack CD. Charming without being Shmaltzy and effortlessly funny, a treat for both sexes and a joy to share.

Uninspiring and a little tired

Emma from Birmingham, England, 25th September, 2007

Even for an avid rom-com fan this was at best a mediocre effort with the odd giggle and at worst a tedious and uninspiring piece of work that goes nowhere. I was left feeling void of any emotion as the film sped to it's entirely predictable conclusion and the complications in the unrealistic affair between the characters of Grant and Barrymore does little to encourage the viewer to buy into their issues. Even the full-on plot crescendo finale left me with a bewildered feeling of 'what really happened?' as the film speeds past opportunities to enable some empathy between viewer and the characters. An amiable way to pass a couple of hours but frankly, there are far better rom-com offerings to spend your time on.

I have wanted to watch this film for a while, as i like both Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore. However, I was slightly disappointed and thought the film had a lot of hype. Just ok for me.
