Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant) is a cynical and self-deprecating former '80s pop idol who turns down an offer to appear on a reality TV show for has-beens. Instead, he chooses to play the far more dignified nostalgia circuit, and hires the lovely but deeply insecure Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore) to water his plants while he’s away. When Alex is tasked with writing a song for pop starlet Cora (Haley Bennett) in just four days, Sophie reveals herself to be a gifted songwriter and they end up making beautiful music together. Despite this contrived set-up, the film, to its credit, deftly avoids many possible rom-com clichés in favour of organic, character-driven conflicts and comedic situations. As Alex and Sophie fall in love, their relationship begins to mirror the song writing process; they grapple with their creative differences and emotional hang-ups, all the while dealing with the pressures of the music industry. The two leads (aided by great supporting turns from Brad Garrett and Kristen Johnston) manage to pull all this off with a lightness of touch that makes the characters' vulnerability appealing rather than pathetic.

Predictable ROMCOM in SD

kjah from , 16th August, 2007

The film itself is very good, and thats coming from a bloke - writing about a chick flick, ha ha i know what your thinking. Overall, this film is definately worth a rent, but quality wise, I feel (unless you have a decent 5.1 surround system) you should add this to your SD list to rent, as picture wise the HD was not exactly stunning - the soundtrack however, was. Ps, very soppy, and predictable, ending!!

Surprisingly enjoyable!

A Customer from Halifax, England, 20th July, 2007

After the shocker that was American Dreamz, Hugh Grant almost redeems himself in this aimiable, throwaway romcom. As stated in another review, Grant resumes his fluffy, stuttery persona with aplomb. Barrymore is nurotic and twee. The plot follows the 'by numbers' path, caters for all your romcom cliche needs and rolls along with enough pace and just enough gags to keep you entertained. The best performance comes from 3rd Rock From The Sun Kristen Johnston who steals the show with the funniest lines.

Wake me up before you go go, or when this "movie" is over

michael smith from Harrogate, 3rd September, 2007

The biggest faults with this film were the continuity 'goofs', i.e. coffee in hand one second, on table the next second and then to the actors lips the next or a half eaten bagel one moment then a whole bagel the next, that kind of thing. The editing wasn't just laughable but was lazy to the point of insulting the viewers intelligence. The 80's pop parodies and references were spot on and while Kristen Johnston gave the only real laughs, the story was as predictable and soppy as Grant himself. Sorry Girls.

Not really a film for guys

Lana from Bath, England, 28th August, 2007

There are a few things about this film that seem appealing especially if you like Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore and films that recollect the 80's. Hugh plays a former PoP! (literal band name) idol who hasn't written a song in years and relives his glory days with small festival gigs until a chance to write a new song for a pop star offers him a fab comeback. The opening music video sequence is actually quite a good and funny satire on Wham...If only the rest of the film was as sharp and funny. Hugh and Drew's characters are not much different from other rom/com characters they've played. A good effort and it reminded me a bit of Wedding Singer only not as funny. But if it's light silly fun rom/com you want, this would be it.
