Judy Holliday reprises her Broadway role in this fresh and entertaining comedy based on Garson Kanin's play, directed by George Cukor. Although reputedly not the first choice for the film role, Holliday won an Academy Award for her priceless portrayal of a "dumb but savvy" blonde who outsmarts the man who attempts to control her. Junk tycoon Harry Crock (Broderick Crawford) uses his ignorant and naive mistress, ex-chorus girl Billy Dawn (Holliday), as a front for his shady deals but finds himself embarrassed to travel in Washington society with his illiterate paramour. Crock hires a journalist (William Holden) who agrees to educate Billy. Holliday is delightful in her transformation to a woman of intellect and culture; the Pygmalion-like story is filled with laughs and sexual innuendo. Billy is an apt pupil and the brutish Crock is the loser in the love game in this appealing, deft film.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Pleasant film version of a cast-iron box-office play, subtle and intelligent in all departments yet with a regrettable tendency to wave the flag.

KATHERINEofARROGANCEe from from HARROW, 21st April, 2004

Definitely a well-made, well-acted movie, under the guidance of one of the great hollywood directors. It's an enjoyable piece of film but feels a little contrived & a little preachy. Also, Judy Holliday's accent is too good, i.e. more annoying to me than I think anyone originally intended. It's been said before but I don't see how Ms Holliday beat the likes of Bette Davis/Anne Baxter (both in All About Eve) or Gloria Swanson (Sunset Boulevard, also starring Bill Holden) to win best actress.

It's a little reminiscent of Pygmalion/My Fair Lady & not nearly as enjoyable as either, at least not for me. The features on the disc are good, especially for a movie that is over 50 years old (the older the movie, generally, the less features it has).

All in all, it's still worth watching & definitely better than most of the movies made currently. It's just not what I would call a 'Classic' but you may disagree...

A Hidden Gem!!

A Customer from South Gloucestershire, England, 22nd November, 2005

This is a hidden gem of a movie. It's the first film I've seen of Judy Holliday, a woman who never quite made it into the big league of her contemporaries. A shame, because if Born Yesterday is anything to go by, she was supremely talented and sadly taken from us all too soon. Still, thank god we have Born Yesterday as testament to her talent. Holliday carries this film about a girl from the wrong side of the tracks in a relationship with a corrupt, bullying millionaire. In order to fit in with the hoi polloi of the social circles they now move in, she is tutored by a handsome stranger in the arts of etiquette, manners, knowledge and academia. Of course, she falls for the tutor, played excellently by William Holden. Holliday is a joy to watch - sexy, sassy, wicked, sweet, witty and beautiful. The film is at times reminiscent of The Apartment, My Fair Lady, Who's That Girl? and Working Girl. Holliday is like a collison between Marilyn Monroe, Melanie Griffith, Lucille Ball and Megan Mullally. She has a natural gift for comedy. A great film. Will make you laugh and well worth renting.

I have seen this wondeful film many times over the years - and it still entertains and enthralls! Judy Holliday was amazing.

Born Yesterday

A Customer from Poole, 3rd July, 2008

This, the earliest of the two versions, starring Judy Holliday, is I think by far the best. The actors must have rehearsed almost to the death, since the flow of dialogue and action is flawless. I particularly like the scene between Holiday and Crawford, during which she winds him up at length over a card game. One expects this bully to explode any second but is is only later that he strikes her. When he does, her cry of anguish is profound, a momentary but affecting grounding of seriousness in a light comedy. It is also very refreshing to see a film with actors who articulate so clearly, in the way few modern actors do or apparently can (how on earth are they taught at drama school these days?). I also like the high-tone black and white medium (colour is essentially vulgar). My one reservation concenrns the denoument, which is contrived. Would a serious and reputed journalist like the one portrayed by William Holden really indulge in such shabby trickery and theft?

Forgotten Gem.

A beautifully acted film. William Holden and Judy holliday make this film for me the chemistry between these actors is caught on film. Holden not best known for comedy but he has the talent for it. I really enjoyed this film even if the end was expected.
