Simon Puritan (Nick Moran) is a hard-drinking, washed-out writer on the road to self-destruction, eking out a living conning the grieving with 'psychic' readings. But his path takes an interesting turn one night when a shadowy disfigured man stops him from being killed by an on-coming train. The figure disappears, but re-emerges as badly burned and horrendously disfigured Jonathan Grey, who visits Puritan at his home. Grey is a well-spoken, intimidating presence who, it seems, has his own secret agenda for Puritan, and opens up a world of devious intrigue.

I don't normally bother reviewing, but ...

Awful film, save yourself the time for watching something better. I'm all for atmosphere and genuine scariness over the current trend of out and out gore, but this was very dull and felt like some bad 70s effort. The main character spent most of the film mooning over the female lead, the paranormal content was minimal and it became obvious very early on who the disfigured stranger was.

better than it looks!

well, after seeing a rough cut trailer for this film i thought it was going to be a bit slow and too cheaply done. i was wrong. the end result was a brilliant film, thoroughly enjoyable. the script was well written and the film well directed. i liked that the film had a 'real' feel to it, although slightly unreal(that'll make sense when you see it) watch out for the team's next effort 'THE CONSPIRACY' they've finished the filming now and it looks to be another good one. enjoy!

Good film; a bit too long and derivative

Chris F from North West England, 30th June, 2009

A reasonably tense 'thriller' which does provide a few twists and turns. The director has clearly seen CITIZEN KANE and lets us know this fact by including a ten minute scene that is a more or less direct copy of Mr Welle's masterpiece. This one scene says a lot about the whole movie; too long and just a little impressed with itself. The use of colour and shadow is reminiscent of films based on graphic novels such as Batman and Sin City although there is very little violence. Overall, I enjoyed the film and it does give food for thought. The director is worth keeping an eye on as perhaps as he learns from his 'mistakes' his films will improve.

this is simply just a great film. So atmospheric and classically british. A real suspense journey. A well made film.

Puritan

Ex journalist under the influence Simon Puritan makes a miserable living as a medium, conning people into believing he talks to the dead. Clearly on the verge of auto destruction, his life takes an unexpected turn when one day horribly disfigured Jonathan Gray asks him to use his 'talents' to help his wife... Hadi Hajaig's feature is ambitious, clever and gorgeous to look at, and features the best performance of LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS star Nick Moran your are likely to see in a long time, In my views, it is probably the last authentic Film Noir recently made in the UK. Better, the film transcends the genre by an elaborate plot that will keep you on your toes up to the end and blends effortlessly Thriller and Supernatural. A real gem.

A modern film noir gem

Really enjoyed this original british film. Visually fascinating, atmospheric and beautifully shot. Touched on interesting subject areas that you wouldn't normally get with standard hollywood fare. A rare british treat.
