"Amazing Grace" is based on the life of antislavery pioneer William Wilberforce (Gruffudd), who, as a Member of Parliament, navigated the world of 18th Century backroom politics to end the slave trade in the British Empire. Elected to the House of Commons at the age of 21, and on his way to a successful political career, Wilberforce, over the course of two decades, took on the English establishment and persuaded those in power to end the inhumane trade of slavery.

One person can make a difference!

A Customer from North London, 25th March, 2007

I really enjoyed watching this excellent movie: it was informative in so many ways. It was foremostly a well documented part of history and the story of a very interesting man's life and how he contributed towards making life better for mankind. It was interesting to watch Wilberforce spend years battling to get the bill through Parliament to abolish slavetrading, and yet get nowhere but he never gave up. I walked away thinking how true it is that we are all more powerful than we give ourselves credit for. One person CAN make the difference! Watch this, it's really a brilliant film !

Educational and Entertaining

PaulaWestwood from , 2nd April, 2007

A really worthwhile interesting and informative film about the humanitarian MP William Wilberforce, and his efforts to abolish the miserable trade in Slaves from Africa to the Carribbean. The film not only highlights the highs and lows of this trade, but also sets out Britains place in the world in the late 1700s/early 1800s and its dealings with France (around the time of the French Revolution) and the rest of the world, a real potted history off the time. Though everyone in this is excellent, Michael Gambon in particular brings real life into the character of Lord Charles Fox. There were a few chavs in our screening that found it too much of a challenge and talked and laughed all the way through - if you are like this then don't spoil it for everyone who has more than a sole brain cell, stay well away and go and see Bean or something more on your intellectual level. Otherwise this might just broaden your mind and is recommended viewing.

Inspiring

Jane from Hertfordshire England, 10th September, 2007

I am ashamed to say that I did not know the story of William Wilberforce and found this film to be a brief insight into what this man achieved in his lifetime. Some brilliant actors in it ,and it is a good history lesson for the children as it deals with the slave trade but it is not too graphic. Worth Watching!

Amazing Film of an amazing man

GpzMike from , 24th March, 2007

The film captures a period in British History where the Politicians and the People seemed strangely at odds. But one man dared to make a difference. Due to a strong faith in God and a friend who was an ex-slave ship captain who became a Chrisitian (John Newton writer of the Hymn Amazing Grace - title of the film) this one man made history and today 200 years later we celebrate the abolition of slavery as a result. The PG rating means the horrors of the slave trade are only referred to rather than depicted, but I would strongly recommend this film. There is a good story line and humour throughout so it is not just a historical drama but an enjoyable film with a powerful message to stand for what we believe in.

An interesting, informative yet enjoyably watchable film about William Wilberforce, a politician determined to abolish the slave trade in 18th century Britain.A great cast of actors make this more than just a film about politics. It's about love, compassion and determination.Plus it has the great music of it's title.

Good historical and moving film

beansbird3031 from , 28th February, 2010

This is a moving (tissue rating = 2 tissues each for me and hubby towards the end), compassionate and educational film about the activist Wiliam Wilberforce and his life and work in attempting, and suceeding, in the abolition of the slave trade. It is historically informative and the characters are rounded, well developed and entertaining (Rufus Sewell has a good part here I thought and Wilberforces wife, Cairan hinds, is refreshingly intelligent and vibrant in the role). I didnt know who wrote Amazing Grace(and I wont include the details here) but the film tells of this mans struggle gently and movingly. The words to this hymn will, for me, forever tell his story and take me to this event in history.

A well known history lesson

A Customer from Somerset, 24th February, 2010

Excellent cast and well portrayed story. Interesting to note the oposition to abolition at the time and the people who were oposing it. Interesting again to learn the final ploy that won the day. Apart from that this film was a very colourful documentary of a very well known happening. Worth watching but not very exciting.

A fascinating account of the famous song, and of the struggle to end slavery. Informative, entertaining and gripping, with great performances from an excellent cast. It makes Wilberforce come to life and starts you on a trail to discover even more about this persistent philanthropist.
