Director Christopher Guest reunites his star-packed team from "A Mighty Wind", "Best In Show" and "Waiting For Guffman" for this hilarious, keen-edged comedy set in a town where "Oscar is the backbone of an industry not known for having a backbone."

In "For Your Consideration", buzz of a potential Oscar nomination sends the cast and crew of the low-budget indie film "Home For Purim" into a wide-eyed frenzy. Catherine O'Hara, Harry Shearer and Parker Posey play "Purim's" lead actors who ride the wave of buzz with odd and oddly touching results. Eugene Levy, Jennifer Coolidge, John Michael Higgens, Jane Lynch, Michael McKean, Bob Balaban and Fred Willard round out the cast of Hollywood types more than happy to exploit, bask in and leverage the Oscar hype.

Sight and Sound

With its patient, watchful camerawork and unhurried pace, the film has a discreet, low-key elegance that makes a refreshing change from the loud, fast-tempo demands of most other Hollywood comedies

End-of-year review

Rehan from , 30th October, 2007

This film must have a been a LOT of fun for the half-familiar faces in it to make - a p*sstake of all Hollywood absurdities, and an enjoyable way of taking off the sillier aspects of a bonkers industry, But what I can't believe is that there are other viewers who thought this subtle; it was about as subtle as a Hummer in a Chelsea backstreet. On the whole, it'd have been most suitable for perhaps two half-hour comedy sketches: certainly not for a full-length film ('movie'), where it overstays its welcome by about 50 mins. And Ricky Gervais needs to stop doing his shtick now: it's getting tiresome.

For Your Consideration

Christopher Guest hits the mark again with his trademark brand of improvisational ensemble comedy. This time he tackles the anticipation and buzz surrounding the potentially Oscar nominated film, Home for Purim. He captures envy and the fragility of actors’ egos during the awards season. As with all of his films following Spinal Tap and Waiting for Guffman, the outstanding cast is what makes the film subtle, delightful, gentle and charming. Catherine O’Hara, Parker Posey and in particular John Michael Higgins are all magnificently funny. Ricky Gervais is the latest addition to the gifted cast and is certainly a stand out character; this is easily his finest performance in a feature film to date as he manages to blend in seamlessly with indisputably the greatest comedy ensemble working today.

No Spinal Tap

Sophie Judge from London, UK, 21st March, 2007

As a huge Christopher Guest fan, I could not wait to see this film, but sadly it lacked the edge of his past films. Sure there were still really funny moments, the line, 'What.. Mummy is going now???' Had me in stiches every time I thought about it for 2 days after, but there was just something missing from this film, and for me it lacked the quality of comedy you get in Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show.

What a shame.

A Customer from Guildford, 15th June, 2007

I wanted to like this so much. I'm such a big Christopher Guest fan and I really hoped this would be good but unfortunately it just wasnt. The cast were great as usual and the mark (Hollywood) had great potential but it just wasnt funny. Maybe it's because it's not shot in a documentary style like his other films?! Probably best just to watch Waiting for Guffman or Best in Show instead!

Was it worth making?

crispin40 from , 19th December, 2009

I really enjoyed 'Best in Show' so expected this sardonic look at Hollywood to be on the same lines. However - it got increasingly tiresome and I almost didn't finish it. Since my partner had a stroke in July 2009, I've been very stressed and not watching many films. So, once this was in the machine, I just sat back and let it wash over me. It was also extremely short - just over one and a half hours. Sometimes its best for a film crew to make one good film and not try to cash in on its successes.

always a welcome Guest

A Customer from London, 22nd April, 2009

Without ever being in the same league as 'Best in Show' or 'Waiting for Guffman' this Guest-ensemble comedy is still worth watching - Eugene Levy is terrific, as are Parker Posey, Catherine O'Hare - damn it they are all good!!! If you are a fan - watch it!!
