Set in 1960s Detroit, DREAMGIRLS follows the commercial and cultural struggles of the R&B recording industry, through the rise of the Dreamettes (later shortened to just the Dreams) from backup singers to headlining international superstars. The trio--Deena (Beyonce Knowles), Effie (Jennifer Hudson), and Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose)--soon discover the harsh reality behind the glamour of fame and fortune, as the group's controlling and shady manager, Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx), uses them to help build his musical empire and capture his dream of crossing over from R&B to the pop charts. He sacrifices Effie's immense talent as lead singer for Deena's stunning, more mainstream look to sell the sound, pushing marketable appeal over musical artisanship--and compromising the ambitions of his proteges.

Since its Broadway debut, DREAMGIRLS has been widely rumoured to be inspired by the hugely successful girl-group the Supremes, as well as some of Motown's biggest players. Knowles's Deena portrays the Diana Ross character, radiant in miraculous recreations of the hairstyles and fashions that made Ross timeless, while Foxx's Taylor exemplifies influential Motown Records founder Berry Gordy Jr. Former AMERICAN IDOL contestant Jennifer Hudson makes her feature-film debut delivering a knockout performance as the larger-than-life Effie, and Eddie Murphy is believable as the misunderstood James Brown-like character of Jimmy "Thunder" Early. Vibrant with colourful costumes and sleek backdrops, the film flows effortlessly from dialogue to musical numbers, each song capturing the richness of the talented cast and the essence of the era, endlessly soaring with fast-paced excitement and non-stop emotion.

Rolling Stone

This baby dazzles like nothing else anywhere... DREAMGIRLS is a movie that has everything: a blazing new star in Jennifer Hudson, a riveting, revitalized Eddie Murphy, a hot-lick score... and a timely story...

HD Version 'Dreamgirls'

A Customer from Folkestone, 26th December, 2007

I tried this HD version of 'Dreamgirls' on my Toshiba HD-EP30K new HD player and it wouldnt play properly, kept coming up with error messages. I thought perhaps it was a firmware issue or because the disc sent to me was badly scatched, or perhaps it was a blu-ray disc? Who knows, just be cautious............

HD info

Nothing about the film per se, but my HD DVD copy was a bit 'tatty' so I expected the worst. (I've got an EP35 with the latest 2.0 firmware). Anyway, after a good old clean, I gave it a whirl and sure enough it ran into trouble during the first chapter. Ejected, cleaned again, skipped a chapter and rewound to near enough the same place, and all was well. So if this happens to you, don't panic, you should be OK. The HD quality of the film is marvellous - both picture and sound.

DreamGirls

For a start I am usually a lover of musicals and any for of musical way of story telling, but in this movie I was surprised how music and song and a story can really be not only painful to the ears but to the story the film. I am not saying that all the songs were bad but the most painful piece of wailing had to be Jenifer Hudsons singing in the Break up scene and truly spoiled the the movie. If she was pregnant why didn't she just come out and say it instead of all that crap that was supposedly sung to convey her feelings, instead you end up having a strangled opera on your hands. Simple words would have conveyed better in some scenes instead of random songs. At the end of the film they say they are going to sing the song 'One Time Only', but instead they go into an operatic R&B over being together again. Sounds a bit 'Old Spice' to me. If you like the sound of strangled R&B then watch this movie. I know I watched it because it had the talent of Jamie Fox and Danny Glover along with Beyonce knowles whom we know has the talent in looks and modelling ability to carry off the role she was given. I am not saying Jennifer hudson hasn't got the voice for the songs but to give that strangled echo an Academy award for that is a nightmare. Quite frankly it is a poorly staged and scripted movie. Disappointed.
