Darren Aronofsky's THE FOUNTAIN is sure to enchant, beguile, and inspire intense debate among his fans. During the gap since 2000's REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, Aronofsky had struggled to bring THE FOUNTAIN to the screen, principally because leading man Brad Pitt dropped out of the project. The complex tale is split into three different time periods, beginning in the 16th century, when a conquistador named Tomas (Hugh Jackman) strives to find the Tree of Life. The second part of the story finds Jackman playing a Buddha-like character who zips through outer space and dreams of a woman named Izzi (Rachel Weisz). And the third part, which consumes most of the film's screen time, is set in the present day and sees Jackman playing a doctor named Tommy, who is married to the terminally ill Izzi. In this third section Tommy strives to find a cure for Izzi's brain tumour, and makes some progress after experimenting on a monkey with a substance discovered in a tree in South America. Meanwhile, Izzi has been writing a book that she calls THE FOUNTAIN, but has left the final chapter for Tommy to write. As Aronofsky pushes and pulls his sepia-tinted film between the three time periods, he weaves a deeply thoughtful, special effects-laden story that touches on themes of mortality and self, and requires a great deal of work from the director's audience. Movies such as Kubrick's 2001 and Tarkovsky's SOLARIS come to mind as Aronofsky gets deep into philosophical waters, and the various story strands of THE FOUNTAIN are as inconclusive and open to interpretation as the films that have clearly influenced it. The film makes for uneasy and sometimes confusing viewing, but will find its audience among intrepid souls who are fully prepared to let go and immerse themselves in Aronofsky's peculiar, daring, and thoughtful cinematic universe.

A strange but tedious film

Paul from manchester, 20th September, 2007

I'm afraid this film is a disappointment. It opens well but just doesn't manage to sustain interest. I found it a struggle to watch the entire film.

"Together we will live forever.."

DaveGaskin from from Cambridge, 4th May, 2008

Every now and again, a cinematic event comes along that challenges us as an audience. It happened with 2001: A Space Odyssey and it happened with Blade Runner. Both of these are now hailed as classics of the sci-fi genre. Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain is another such film - way ahead of its time and one that deserves repeated viewings to appreciate the details. Frustratingly for those of us who love this kind of movie, there is very little room in the current cinematic landscape for films that don't offer a narrative that can be distilled into one sentence, as demonstrated by The Fountain's poor box-office returns and mixed critical response. Centering around the story of a man trying to save the life of the woman he loves, set across three time periods, The Fountain is a captivating, visually compelling, thought-provoking gem of a movie. The exceptional performances from Hugh Jackman & Rachel Weisz and yet another mesmerising score by Clint Mansell really offer something fresh, different and inventive. A perfect example of film as an art form.

Profound...

Treadstone from , 20th January, 2008

The Fountain is story about a doctor who is desperately trying to find cure for his beloved wife who is dying from a brain tumour. I was curious to learn that Brad Pitt was, at one stage, going to be the lead actor in this film, but pulled out half way through production. However Hugh Jackman was absolutely superb, as was Rachel Weiss. The chemistry between them is amazing and there is a very real sense of the bond between them. This movie is quite a journey and potential viewers should be warned that it does get rather bizarre in places and is definitely a tear jerker. This is very thought provoking and explores the realm's of love through life and death and leaves you asking many questions. Very deep, quite heavy and it certainly made an impact on me. I should point out that I did enjoy Vanilla Sky and Mulholland drive, so if neither of those movies were for you I would leave this well alone. That said I would highly recommend, particularly in HD...but keep an open mind.

Dreamy

This is a great love story. Its bonkers though... I find it very hypnotic to watch, watched it on its original release in the cinema and picked up on alot more clues on this second viewing. I mainly just like it as its relaxing and pretty to look at (minus Hughs shiny, pointy head). If you like Solaris (another film that was widely panned) then you will like this. It has the same dream like quality about it.
