Thirty years after Sylvester Stallone first introduced the underdog backroom brawler from Philadelphia in the Oscar-winning ROCKY, Rocky Balboa returns for one last dance. Speculation as to whether Balboa, in his prime, would have been able to defeat lacklustre champ Mason The Line Dixon spurs Dixons management to set up an exhibition fight between the two. That Balboa is in his 50s and wouldnt be sanctioned to fight anyone, let alone a man 30 years his junior and in the prime of life, must be left up to the viewers ability to suspend disbelief. To its credit, however, the movie addresses at every turn the insanity of a man approaching 60 getting back into a boxing ring, and Balboas impassioned explanation of his motivations is just believable enough to give all other improbabilities a free pass. The film is very much a love letter to Philadelphia, and Stallone, who wrote and directed the movie, shoots everything with an unflinching eye that humanises the mean streets of the City of Brotherly Love and evokes the gritty dignity of the original film. While Burt Youngs cantankerous Paulie and Tony Burtons Duke both return, Talia Shire, sadly, does not reprise her role as the beloved Adrian. Its revealed early in the film that Adrian has died of cancer, and its the pain of that tragedy that ultimately fuels Rocky. Boxing as a metaphor for life is certainly nothing new, but Stallone makes a legitimate contribution to the tradition with ROCKY BALBOA. Life hits harder than any man can, and ones ability to keep getting up until the final bell rings is the true measure of self.

Total Film

As Stallone's gentle gift for funny, engaging, naturalistic dialogue starts to take hold, the movie fills up with tiny, poignant moments...As a comeback, it could be the greatest triumph of Sly's career

G.O.A.T

For a big Rocky fan like me, I was hoping that this was a fitting sign off for my years of loyalty (I'm glad it didn't end with Rocky 5). I was not disappointed. The film works its way through the memories of the previous Rocky films and true fans will recognise characters and locations from the first films. It introduces a different style of opponent in Mason Dixon which was a refreshing change. I watched Blu-Ray on my new PS3 and was astounded with the colours and sound eminating from the fight scenes. My girlfriend is not a fan and even she found it an emotional and exciting ride. Sylvester Stallone (despite his critics) was very good although some of the 'emotional conversations' with his son needed some work. Overall, I'm so pleased that this film was made and I really enjoyed it. For me it was a 5 star, but in respect of other films, it was probably a three or a four.

Rock Balboa

A Customer from kj, 18th July, 2007

It dragged on for ages with rubbish sub plot. Then the fight action tried to be clever making it apppear like real boxing footage that just did not work. Waiting for the next one - which I will not bother with. Should have stuck with the normal footage. Also, Sly looks really bad in this film. What a great face for radio.

Good Old Rocky

A Customer from London, 7th June, 2007

Much better than expected. Rocky has clearly aged but still possess the same humorous wit. Still as emotional as ever but also still a warrior in the ring. The Blu-Ray version delivers breathtaking picture quality on a Playstation 3. The step up from standard DVD's is plain to see. The DTS surround sound is exceptional. I cannot go back to standard definition anymore.

Watchable

Congratulations to Stallone for reviving the 'gritty' feel of the first film. However, it was let down by the unrealistic, 'cheesy' (almost comical) training and fight scenes. Any guy that has lifted weights or done some sparring knows that it could have been portrayed so much better.

Good to see Rocky back - but

AlwaysOnTheMove from , 30th March, 2009

But let this be the last time. Stalone does a good job, but I guess the script is predictable at best and therefore not as good as the original. Move on ....
