For five years, Superman (Brandon Routh) has been away from Earth, coaxed into space by a belief that Krypton may still exist. Finding nothing, he comes back to a changed world--not only has terrorism become rampant, but Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) has married, started a family, and won the Pulitzer for her piece 'Why the World Doesn't Need Superman'. After a stop in Smallville to see his adopted mother (Eva Marie Saint), Superman is back in Metropolis, and Clark Kent has his old job back at the Daily Planet, with everyone still incredibly oblivious to his alter ego. But where there's Superman, there's Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey), and he is likely to be planning something dastardly--in this case, using a piece of pilfered kryptonite to grow an entirely new continent that he will control. Bryan Singer (X-MEN 1 and 2), armed with a script by Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty, approaches the red cape with reverence for the lore of the character, and respect for Richard Donner's SUPERMAN (1980) and Richard Lester's 1980 sequel, films that ushered in the era of the modern superhero film. Singer's SUPERMAN is filled with melancholy, and not so subtly suggests the notion of Superman as a Christ figure, sacrificing himself to save mankind. But there are still laughs, mostly courtesy of Spacey (clearly having a blast) and Parker Posey as his moll, Kitty Kowalski, as well as plenty of gasp-inducing set pieces, including a spectacular and terrifying near plane crash and a sinking boat. While modern visual effects have allowed Superman to reach entirely new realms, Singer keeps them from becoming the film's raison d'etre, thus keeping the Man of Steel's gigantic heart intact--heavy though it may be.

Superman or Pooperman?

A Customer from Kidderminster, England, 9th June, 2007

I first saw this film on normal DVD and I did think it was a good return for the cape'd crusader. The storyline is classic Superman style, the acting was well up to standard and some of the visual effects were very good. However the film gets a little tyresome in places but quickly recovers. The Blu-Ray version is visual ecstasy, vibrant colours and awesome soundtrack so this alone makes up for it's downfalls. It is a worthwhile viewing and if you saw the normal DVD version I recommend you try the Blu-Ray just so you can see the differences!! Mind Boggling!

HE CAN NAFF OFF BACK AGAIN!

Norman Barry from Surrey, England., 10th February, 2010

A painfully over-long tribute to Christopher Reeve. Superman has been away for 2-5 years (I think. I wasn't paying that much attention, but Lois Lane's kid is at least eight), and comes back looking at least ten years younger than Reeve's incarnation (as does Lane). Both leads look like they've stepped out of High School Musical. Spacey's Lex Luther is underused and fails to lift this out of the mire. The whole thing smacks of both eyes on reinvigorating the franchise with actors young enough to churn out at least another two or three films (with an unexiting development projecting it even further!). The only 'extra' I watched was Spacey's Luther. I respect Spacey as an actor, but he shows himself to be a pompous ass who clearly feels well above such trash (fair point I suppose) and must simply have wanted to tick the 'big budget blockbuster' box before, hopefully, returning to what he does best.

Average Movie

It looks like Superman spends most of the movie catching falling objects. This Superman looks a lot like Christopher Reeves. It is an OK movie but falls short of other Comic heros remake like the Bale's Batman series....

A Good Remake?

A Customer from Northampton, 9th March, 2009

I saw this in the cinema, and really enjoyed it. I was surprised by how much like the original it was, down to the atmosphere and the appearance of Superman/Clark Kent. Watching it again, I did get a little bored towards the end. Without giving anything away, the plot is very similar to the original, and Lex Luthor's big scheme is, well, a little dull. The effects are good and the Blu-ray looks good. One curious thing is that there is no HD soundtrack on the disc, just a standard DD 5.1 mix which is strange, as HD sound is one of the selling points of Blu-ray - and the HD-DVD version had it!!! Still, if you have a subwoofer and your volume set to a reasonable level, the opening scene just might blow you out of your seat!
