Great, lighthearted fun!

MiserabLes from from Newcastle upon Tyne, 19th October, 2007

We loved this! My wife's choice and I knew what to expect - but admit this was better than I was anticipating. I know it may not be everybody's cup of tea, but if you love the rom-com genre and a laugh at a film which can laugh at itself and have a giggle at the 80's music scene then you'll love it too. Hugh Grant was pretty much cast in character as you'd expect (which isn't a bad thing!), and with Drew Barrymore in support it worked brilliantly. The rest of the supporting cast were very good and there are enough one liners in there to keep the giggles going throughout. Obviously the romantic twist is there but even then its so tongue in cheek its not too OTT for the blokes! The story's pretty good and it follows all the tried and tested rom-com principles. Great couples film (or a group of lasses I suppose, not butch enough for us guys alone!) - and if you were a teenager in the 80s and into Wham, Spandau Ballet and the like you'll crease yourself laughing - we did! Enjoy.

Dull

Lisa from N Wales, 12th July, 2007

Very dull, the best bit was the 80's video for the theme song. I found it hard to stay awake, it wasn't funny, it just plodded along and it was predictable. IMO this is the worst Hugh Grants film. He was ok in it but the rest of the acting and the plot (what plot?) was poor and very boring.

No music and crap lyrics

Rehan from , 10th September, 2007

A lot of people had a lot of fun parodying 80s style: and that's the very best thing that can be said about this utterly ghastly film. Hugh Grant should hang his head in shame and exile himself from society for a decade for being involved in this saccharine dross - this is a film that's so paint-by-numbers cute and so relentlessly sugary that your teeth will start corroding after 20 minutes. There wasn't a single moment of acting that rang true, everything was a semaphoring embarrassment of cliché and stageyness. if you find this sort of sweetness rewarding, well then you deserve to be as obese as you no doubt are!

Poptastic Rom-Com !!

PaulaWestwood from , 12th February, 2007

The first few minutes (Huh Grant and his band with a New Romantic 80's look) were more frightening for me than an 18 rated horror - but yes, I suppose we really DID dress like that and buy tthe music. The film centres on Hugh Grant as a has been star from an 80's group called 'POP', having one last shot, and Drew Barrymore a slightly odd 'normal' girl. The outcome is hilarious and romatic, the Drew and Hugh thing works for me. All in all there is a hint of Pop-Corn in the film - but the corn is intended and never takes over what is for me a brilliant rom-com. I would definately recommend this.... also, if anyone has the soundtrack... I can dust off my disco ball and a frilly blouse...

For Grant and Barrymore fanatics only

Duzzbob from , 16th February, 2010

Not one of my finest moments, but after seeing Barrymore in the Wedding Singer I always have high hopes for her. Unfortunately in this instance even the sight of Grant doing a botty wiggle (reminiscent of Love Actually) could not improve this film.

If you are a diehard fan of both of the above, then I am sure you will be entertained..barely. The plot, which was very weak, and the peformances from two people who clearly did not want to be there, well frankly left me feeling rather empty.

Feel good Rom Com

CaiusAristotle from , 12th February, 2010

This is a very watchable romantic comedy starring Hugh Grant as a has been eighties pop star and Drew Barrymore as a kooky wordsmith let down in love. Alex (Hugh Grant) has a wry cynicism about the music business and is able to crank out neat melodies but he is no lyricist. He is making a passable living wandering around the backwaters of the has been circuit, making appearances at fun fairs, 80s nostalgia concerts and so forth. He agrees to enter a competition to write a song for a current top of the bill icon of pop but the lyricist assigned to help is a bit out on the dark side. It happens that Sophie (Drew Barrymore) listens as she waters Alex’s plants as a favour to her friend who usually does the job and comes up with lyrics of her own as the artists work. Her lyrics are better than those of the psychotic lyricist. Alex and Sophie eventually get together to come up with a song for the competition which they win and a long the way get pretty attached to each other. Grant plays his usual role that he excels at, namely, that of the laid back, near caddish, easy and friendly person who does not take life too seriously but is looking for something more. The more in this case turn out to be Sophie. Drew Barrymore plays her role nicely balancing sentiment and kookiness without spilling to far in one direction or the other. The two leads work well together and the movie has a whole feel good air about it. There are some good digs at the music business and a great send up of the eighties pop scene; as others have said a great movie to watch with your wife or girl friend.

It is really good feel good film that will make you laugh. Hugh does what Hugh does best and it is entertaining. Still singing 'POP goes my heart' I can't be the only one? When you watch the film you will understand.
