All too real life drama.

A Customer from Surrey, 6th May, 2007

An authentic and quite terrifying low-budget, high tension film about a 12 year old runaway girl who finds herself alone, hungry and friendless, sleeping rough on the streets of London. It is here that she is picked up by a basically good-hearted prossie, not only destitute and a drug addict, but scared for her own life, Reluctantly, she lures the young girl into a paedophile trap. What happens next is the basis of this Paul Williams film. The little girl is played by Georgia Groome, a natural born actress of the same age. The tart with a heart, Lorraine Stanley, gives a wonderfully insightful performance into the highly dangerous and degrading profession of prostitution. The other actors...some more recognisable than others... all display great talent. At times, this film is almost too painful to watch. There's a lot of violence; although much of it is implied rather than shown, and in my opinion, none of it is gratuitous. Personally, I found this a thoroughly engrossing movie. Even forgot to snack. But perhaps you need to be in the mood for something really gritty to enjoy it.

Hard hitting Drama

A Customer from Hertfordshire England, 2nd July, 2007

Not for the faint hearted this film takes a very realistic look at child prostitution and what life is also like on the streets as a working girl. The subject matter although disturbing is unfortunately going on and this film highlights it and does not attempt in any way to dodge the issue. The acting is superb and shows yet again that British cinema is among the best in the world.

The Best British film in years

A Customer from Bradford, 10th May, 2007

Utterly gripping from first to last, London to Brighton is an uncomfortable film and all the more commendable for it. The film follows a girl (Georgia Croome) and a prostitute sent along with her to a punters flat, as they make their escape to Brighton after it all goes sickenly wrong. As the film does not follow a chronological order I'm keen not to give anything away as the ending is a tour de force. Beautifully played by the whole cast, special mention must go to the young Croome whose tackling of an extremely tough role at such an age is an incredible achievement comparable with Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver.

Disturbingly good.

We had a couple of friends around whilst watching this and i noticed them squirming uncomfortably throughout this film. Not suprisingly given the subject matter but to be honest i thought it was an excellent, hard hitting film. Focusing on the exploitation of vulnerable people and what they are capable of doing for cash and what others are capable of doing for cheap thrills. Great British cinema-can't recommend it enough but it can make for pretty uncomfortable viewing at times.

Excellent!

blackgal from , 12th February, 2010

Anyone who says this film is rubbish has not taken any notice of it! It is a really gripping story that is very true to life. It is not as glossy as American films and yes you can tell it has not got a very big budget but the actors and the storyline are brilliant all the same. It is upsetting in parts but a truly great flick! I recommend this for viewing!!!!!

London to Brighton

MrK from , 11th February, 2010

OK, to be fair to this film, it was a budget production. 80k doesn’t get you much in film production terms these days, and never has, so the team wouldn’t have expected payment for their part in it, and film sets would be whatever you could lay your hands on for free at the time. With that in mind it was probably made purely for the love of film making. With that out of the way, I can now give this film some critique for what it’s worth. Budget it may have been. But does the audience care whether it cost 80k or 80 million. I think the answer is no. What they want is a watchable movie. And it was watchable. For me, the script could have been more fluid and not so tight; time and money I suppose. But having said that, it would be unfair to hold it up to other great London based gangster films, like Villain, Get Carter, The Kray’s etc and even Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels for that matter, which had a very good 3 act script. This little piece is as dark as it gets and feels quite intimidating at times, as it touches on the last of the great taboos - paedophilia. Other moments are quite predictable. I personally found the over use of close-ups to draw the viewer into the story quite annoying after a while and longed for a few long shots and respites like Kelly and Joanne having a coffee on Brighton sea front for instance, where if time had allowed we could have had a bit more back story about the 12 year old as they chatted. The saving grace of this film is the acting. Everyone put into it far more than they probably received from it. That it was a labour of love there is no doubt. Is it worth seeing? Yes, I think it is. If not to make your own lives feel a bit more secure, then to wake you up to the realities of seedy street life you get in today's big cities. If you don’t feel slightly ashamed at being part of the human race after you have watched this film, then you should.

This was gritty and in your face, I really enjoyed it even though it was quite depressing. This is not for the faint hearted.
