An extravagant dramatisation of a gilded and tragic chapter in history. Emperor Caligula's (John Simm) mind is unraveling and in a fit of rage he murders his sister's husband on false charges of conspiracy and sends Agrippina (Laura Morante, HOTEL) into exile. Adopting Agrippina's son Nero (Hans Matheson, TV's DR. ZHIVAGO) as his heir, the Emperor hands the young man the throne by means of a false will. Nero ascends to the throne as the most powerful man in Rome, but deteriorates and finally falls due to the paranoia, guilt, and bloodlust that haunts him. Directed by Paul Marcus (PRIME SUSPECT), the film recalls its contemporary, TROY, in its epic scale and scope.

NERO

XL5 from , 28th November, 2007

I thought this was an excellent. absorbing, fascinating movie - iit kept me watching because Nero is nothing like the madman that we are familiar with although he does become one but in a very thought provoking way- was it the drugs or was it luv! It also has a very interesting Christian message as its ending and is possibly one of the best - if not the most spectacular- Roman movies i have ever seen. Rather long but great if you like films with characters dressed as Romans. Also good for obtaining Romanesque interior decoration ideas and also has very interesting rustic costumes to go with those kinky Roman soldier uniforms i know you all love!

WOODEN!

OliveBrown from , 26th March, 2009

I have to say that Hans Matheson was superb as the fierce but childlike Nero. I wish i could say this about the lead female whose dubbing was awful. This factor ruined the film for me, along with the fact it was so long and many of the actors were wooden!
