Flawless

A Customer from Magical Kent, 14th September, 2003

It's 3 hours long but never drags. It's about hobbits, elves, dwarves and wizards but feels like an epic drama. It's the first part of a trilogy but works perfectly as a complete film. It's TOO GOOD!

I've only met one person who didn't like this film, and they were weird. On whatever level you choose to examine it, it can't really be faulted; Acting, Screenplay, Direction, Effects, big budget blockbuster or intelligent literary adaptation, there's nothing wrong with it. You've probably already seen it, so I don't really know why i'm adding a review, and i'm not saying anything original... but if, by some freak chance, you've NOT watched this yet, get it now!

The DVD is great, too, as they've chucked about a million extras at it, most of which involves all of the main people from the film (Jackson, McKellan, Wood etc).

Like watching paint dry

Nakedswordsman from from Darwen, 3rd January, 2007

Don't believe the hype. Its bladder bustingly long, its tedious and you won't care. Peter Jackson made Bad Taste, Braindead and The Frightners. All top notch films. Why did he make this never ending trilogy only to be followed up by King Kong. Another yawn fest. Unless you suffer from narcolepsy, don't bother with any of this tosh.

The most precious movie(s) ever made - Overwhelmingly Special.

Debbie from Scotland, 17th April, 2005

If you haven't seen this movie after no doubtedly hearing all the hype, then you owe it to yourself (and to Peter Jackson!) to watch it. I'd never seen anything like it before. I didn't watch it at the cinema and never knew what it was about. I watched it after hearing my Uncle giving it so much praise that I had to see it. I was overwhelmed by the entire movie, it's enchanting characters and the wonderful story set in 'Middle Earth.'............. Frodo, a hobbit of the Shire must carry the great burden of the 'one ring' and see that it is destroyed in order to save all of Middle Earth from the evil dark Lord Sauron. Amongst the Fellowship who help him along the way are: Aragorn (played by Viggo Mortensen,) Legolas the Elf Prince(played by Orlando Bloom,) and Gandalf the wizard, (played by Ian McKellen) The entire cast are astounding. I get so frustrated when I hear or see the pathetic attempts to criticise the LOTR movies as none are even worthy of listening to. Watching this movie gives you some idea of the incredible amount of time, effort, hard work and love that has gone into this brilliant adaptation of years of Tolkien's brilliant work........... Some one told me that they didn't want to see this movie as they had no interest in it. I told her to keep taking the tablets and let me know if they ever find a procedure to reverse her obvious labotamy! PLEASE SEE THIS MOVIE.

Part 1: The Plot Is Set In Motion

Jaoharts from from Chester, 3rd March, 2010

This is only the second time I have seen this film, and I enjoyed it.

I didn't think it was the be-all and end-all of cinema, as is often protrayed. And with the film being so long, I did find myself thinking about switching over in the lulls half way through. But I did find myeslf actually looking forward to the next step in the saga, and so for that it has made me engage with the characters and want to pursue the story to its conclusion.

Tolkien’s Middle Earth fully realised

Coolintheman from , 9th February, 2010

When the first film in the feverishly anticipated Lord of the Rings Trilogy first graced our screens I was absolutely spellbound and three hours later hobbled from the cinema sporting a numb backside and huge grin. While each film in the series saw an increase in CG thrills and epic high fantasy, I still look most fondly on PJ’s first foray into Middle Earth. It may be because each time I watch The Fellowship it revives in me that boyish excitement at first seeing Tolkien’s Middle Earth fully realised. I was sceptical that the film could do anything but disappoint my high expectations but it spectacularly exceeded them. Perhaps the greatest praise a book adaptation in the fantasy genre can receive, not least of all the undisputed greatest in this genre, is that watching this film deepened my enjoyment of the book itself. It is testament to Peter Jackson, that our imaginations now blend seamlessly together and I’ll always gladly imagine Ian McKellen’s Gandalf the Grey when I return to delve into Tolkien’s world.

The Emperor's New Ring

AKant from , 12th April, 2009

Once upon a time, in the dim, distant and what must have been incredibly dull past, some posh bloke with royal connections wrote some fantasy novels and everyone had to pretend they were really good. Each one had about a million characters with riduculous names that it took months of practise to remember and a plot that would surely seem obscure beyond believe to anyone who still has their marbles. Unfortunately not everyone does seem to have all their marbles in place, least of all the esteemed film maker who though it would be a good idea to make 8 hour epics out of each book and set them all in near darkness. On the plus side, you can watch the films in much less than the lifetime it would take you to read the dreary books. You can then pretend you've read them and use the time you've saved to bore people senseless by telling them how amazing you thought they were and bang on about what a great writer Tolkien was, honest.
