Rita Tushingham stars in this Hammer thriller as Brenda, a young Liverpool lass who goes to London in search of the perfect man and a better life. Unfortunately, the seamy underside of London grabs hold of her when she falls for a handsome but psychotic young man named Peter (Briant). Becoming increasingly obsessed with Peter, Brenda begins to lose touch with both herself and reality and fails to recognize that Peter is a misanthropic murderer. An incredibly bleak thriller, STRAIGHT ON TILL MORNING is a sardonic, nightmarish fairy tale that presents the flipside of early 1970s feminism.

Off the Beaten Hammer Track

A Customer from Staffordshire, England, 23rd February, 2010

As part of a Hammer Horror collection this is not the usual fare of vampires, werewolves etc. Instead we have sixties icon Rita Tushingham as Brenda, a young girl who is (putting it mildly) away with the fairies. She leaves home in Liverpool to go to London to have her baby and then moves in with a beautiful young girl - a blonde (man-eating) flatmate. Poor (plain) Brenda not only cannot complete but she is not pregnant either. Soon circumstances lead to her path crossing several times with Peter, a very strange young man. When Brenda and Peter finally properly meet (she steals his dog and then returns it) it is clear that any sane person would give him a very wide berth. But neither of these two people seem particularly sane, nor are they able to fit in with the rest of society. Soon Brenda moves in with Peter and, despite certain obvious problems, they might be ideal for each other. But people change, and sometimes they grow up when it is far too late. An interesting one this, best late at night after a couple or three beers.

fantastic

absolutely brill film starring the great Shane Briant. I wont give away the plot but I really felt for his character. I know my sympathies should probably have been with Rita Tushingham, but my heart broke for Shane. Just shows what a truly amazing actor he really is. Rent it, watch it, love it, buy it. I did!

The end of the swinging 60's

itstinks from , 1st September, 2008

Rita Tushingham goes from playing the northern girl come south to be comically seduced by Michael Crawford in The Knack to a northern girl come south to be menaced in this film. A lot of the film tricks of the time are in force in this film, quck cuts between scenes which are not in chronological order and the violence is implied rather than shown. Interesting curiosity piece which seems to be a precursor to the Hammer House of Mystery and Suspense tv series (except with more nudity).
