Adding an extra dimension to Lauren Weisberger's bestselling novel, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA showcases Meryl Streep's knack for combining humour and sadness. While likely inspired by notorious VOGUE editor Anna Wintour, Streep's Miranda Priestly (head of Runway magazine) is entirely her own creation. Sporting silvery hair, a vast collection of fur coats, an encyclopedic knowledge of all things fashionable, and a killer smile, Miranda is full of wicked charm. With her mature beauty and commanding presence, Miranda is as fascinating to watch as she is intimidating to the constant rotation of assistants thrown her way.
When bookish Northwestern grad Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) interviews to become Miranda's newest lackey, Miranda hires her not for her lacklustre wardrobe but for her intellect. Inside the pristine Runway offices, Andy suffers through a never-ending list of impossible tasks, and is the subject of constant harassment by Miranda's jealous first assistant (Emily Blunt). But to the dismay of her boyfriend (Adrian Grenier) and close friends, Andy slowly finds herself seduced by the glamorous world of fashion, and by Miranda herself. While Andy's transformation comes largely in the form of new designer clothing, the makeover is mental as well. What starts out as a firm belief in fashion's vapidity and in Miranda's heartlessness gradually fades into the suspicion that the boss-from-hell might just be hiding a soul. While the book demonised its title character, the film gives new depths to her wrath. As Andy trades her undergrad wardrobe for one packed with Prada and Chanel (with help from Stanley Tucci in a brilliant role), viewers are able to savour the work of costume designer Patricia Field. Together with director David Frankel (who also worked on SEX AND THE CITY), Field creates a world of fashion so wonderfully extreme it would be hard for anyone to resist.

The Director wears Prada

Waterboy from from Hertfordshire, 21st March, 2007

I thought this was a comedy about the fashion industry, but it wasn't funny. I was dissapointed to find it was the story of a cardigan wearing size 12 becoming a hideously, yet 'fashionably' dressed 'size 0'. I laughed at the film rather than with it. The involvement of the Sex in the City team (a series I loved) has changed this from a satire of the fashionistas into a homage to designer labels.

Plotless, Pointless and Dull

Kevin Sullivan from Belfast, Ireland, 13th October, 2006

Why any critic gave this film even a remotley good review is beyound me, they must be in the pay of the studios! This piece of cinematic trash is so bad that you will hate yourself in the morning. There is no plot. The story is static, moving only to dress Anne Hathaway in more designer clothes. The clothes on her are the best thing about this film. I went to the cinema to watch this film, thinking it was a comedy, I had a one laugh at the start of this rubbish, we all did, my friends and I, and then sat there for an hour and a half thinking when will this end. I should have left half way through but I had a large container of popcorn!

sooo dull

Candygirl from , 5th January, 2007

this was beyond dull, there was no plot and the acting was...well bad. I can see why they call Ugly Betty 'Devil wears Prada but good' as that is how I kept referring to it. The ending was poor and like the girl from Belfast, I left once I finished my popcorn as did most of the audience.

Absolute tedium from start to end

Kathy from Cheshire, 21st January, 2007

We wasted 2 hours watching this pointless, plot-less, dull story about the fashion industry. I couldn't work out what the film was meant to be as there was no love story, no comedy, no intrigue - nothing. Meryl Streep was the only reason I even tried the film 'cos she's never done a bad film - but even her brilliant acting skills couldn't liven up such a boring film. I just wanted to punch Anne Hathaway - she was so annoyingly girly all the way through with her doe-eyed stares and sweety little smile - sickening. The infererence was that as a woman as long as you are pretty, keep schtum and smile lots whilst looking through your fringe, everyone will love you - especially men. She was soooo boring, the type of girl I can't stand and only the dullest of men like. One of the most disappointing films I've seen especially after all the hype. Those great devil fork shoes weren't even in it!

Passes the time.

Catfishgirl from , 5th March, 2010

This is fun to start off with as serious-minded wannabe journalist lands a job at a high fashion magazine with an alarming perfectionist for a boss but gets steadily less entertaining as the film speeds through her seduction by the dark side and ultimate sickly-sweet redemption.

The Devil Wears Prada

A Customer from England, 2nd March, 2010

I had never been too sure about watching this film especially as Im not into fashion and Id heard about the bitchness of the office. As Id been going through a bad phase at work that was something I didnt want to see. But I was pleasantly surprise to find that I liked this film. The characters all came to life brilliantly. I must admit I really wanted to see this film because of Simon Baker being in it which I only found out a short time ago from a good friend. The way Anne Hathaways character changed over the course of the film I loved how she stood up to her boss and Emily in the office who seemed to be more bitchy than the boss. Brillaint performances from Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and of course Simon Baker who's character seemed to also change from charming to sleazy. A feel good film where it all comes right in the end.

Boring and hideous!

A Customer from London England, 2nd March, 2010

I sat through half of the movie, and then seeing as it was getting rather boring, and the plot kept repeating itself and going nowhere, I got up and switched it off. Since it had no story line whatsoever, they had to put in sex, and rude scenes, to keep your attention. I don't think this should be rated for a 12 year old. Rather it should be rated at least 15 if not more. What are they teaching the youth of today?
