Comic sensation Will Ferrell (SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, ANCHORMAN) plays Ricky Bobby, a figure who is at once laughably ridiculous, infuriating, and loveable. Ricky Bobby, with his bleached-blonde wife, cute sons Walker and Texas Ranger, and dim sidekick Cal (award-winning actor John C. Reilly, flexing his considerable comedic muscle), has got it made. He is NASCAR's most popular driver, and nearly every aspect of his life is endorsed by a recognisable product. Yet his racetrack kingdom is not unshakeable: two formidable opponents, his unpleasable father, Reese (Gary Cole), and a flashy new opponent, the openly gay French import Jean (played by a hilarious Sasha Baron Cohen, known to millions as Borat and Ali G), threaten to hijack his crown and expose his vulnerabilities. Though it is one of America's most popular sporting events, the association of NASCAR with uneducated, backwards rednecks seems cemented into the American consciousness. So the brilliant comedy TALLADEGA NIGHTS: THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY, is not just a side-splitting series of slapstick pratfalls and over-the-top accents, but a lens into an important part of American culture. Though many of the jokes are easy laughs (having Ferrell run around shirtless is a guaranteed guffaw-fest), the script (co-written by Farrell and Adam McKay) is nuanced and intelligent, lending its characters much more sympathy and complexity than dumber comedies are want to do. Every performer--from Ferrell to Amy Adams (as Susan, Bobby's fawning assistant)--tackles his or her part with joy and relish. A hilarious humdinger of a movie with smarts and savvy, TALLADEGA NIGHTS ensures Ferrell's position as one of comedy's shining talents.

A very very sad load of old ballads

Mbub from Westbury, Wilts, 16th July, 2007

This film is about a racecar driver who loses everything and then finds his path back to the big time. Cor Blimey Chief as Penfold use to say, what a load of old sh*t, which he didn't say. I sat though bad acting, bad accents, especially from Sacha Baron Cohen and a bad story that made me wish I hadn't watched such an awful film as this.

Vroooommmmm

kh08 from bristol, 31st January, 2007

A typical Farrell film very much in the same vain as Anchorman, Elf, K&S etc. Farrell is typically an over the top simpleton supported by an excellent cast in particular John C Reilly, Sacha Baron Cohen and the kids playing Walker and Texa Ranger. As usual the humour is not of the slapstick variety if you want that then rent Adam Sandler. Farrell provides you with Characters that you believe in although you think to yourself nah these can't be right. A few laugh out loud moments with great characters. Days of Thunder with a splash of Irony and humour

Brilliantly funny!

A Customer from North London, 14th September, 2006

I walked out of the cinema smiling and with a real buzz! Not alot of comedies around can do that to me! It is really funny in a lighthearted type of way... If you want to cure a bad or heavy mood then watch this, you'll be glad you did. I can't wait for it to come out on DVD so I can buy it as my picker upper!

Only gets half a star because I can't score it lower!

I'm not a massive Will Ferrell fan anyway - apart from Elf and Anchorman I find most of his films a bit lame with only a few laughs. Talladega Nights has to be one of the worst films I have ever seen though! I turned it off after an hour, I just couldn't take anymore of the lazy attempt at comedy which seemed to consist of Ferrell shouting a lot. Watch Anchorman again instead of bothering with this pile of rubbish!

The kids are alright

MrXStitch from , 17th January, 2010

The Ballad of Ricky Bobby is definitely one of the better Will Ferrell films, and his partnership with John C Reilly is one of the strengths of this film. It's nice to see Sasha Baron Cohen in it as well, although his character isn't fully realised. However the best characters in this film, without a doubt, are Walker and Texas Ranger, the two kids. The funniest part of this DVD is in the special feature that showcases all the clips featuring these two terrors. It's a hilarious five minutes that should be compulsory watching. This film is good for a laugh, as are most Will Ferrell films, and is definitely worth a watch.
