Based on a true story, this film is both a riveting courtroom drama and a first class chiller. A Catholic Priest (Tom Wilkinson) is on trial for homicidal negligence after performing a failed exorcism on Emily Rose, devout college girl (Jennifer Carpenter) now dead from assorted wounds and malnutrition. Laura Linney plays Erin Bruner, the priest's defense lawyer, and Campbell Scott plays the chief prosecutor, who argues persuasively that Emily was likely suffering from psychotic epilepsy and could have been saved with hospitalisation and medicine. The demonic possession unfolds in a series of spine-tingling flashbacks and as it does so, the initially doubtful Erin is visited by evil forces and her own soul seems to be at stake. More than a criminal negligence case, the trial becomes about the importance of recognising the limits of rationality and the possibility of a world beyond the visible. In portraying the extent to which wildly different belief systems have splintered modern society this film couldn't be more relevant or timely. Linney and Campbell are first rate, as is to be expected, creating great depth for their characters even though the script grants them almost no personal lives; it's a very 'stick to the facts' sort of tale. Each character lives a life of apparent near-isolation, which adds to the cumulative effect of unease. The house where Emily grows up is spookily oppressive, the scenes of possession are truly scary and a dark sense of foreboding may follow viewers long after the credits have rolled. Carpenter earns a place as a 21st century scream queen with her hair-raising, fearless performance; Mary Beth Hurt plays the judge. PLEASE NOTE: This is a BLU-RAY DVD - this disc may not play on your television. Please rent the standard DVD version if unsure. Thank you.

Laura Linneys hair

you ever hear that expression 'you wait for a bus then two come along at once?'. Well the exorcism of Emily Rose is kind of like that you're waiting for your horror bus with the dark interior and possible serial killer hiding onboard then your courtroom drama bus turns up instead with its boring people on board talking utter boring nonsense. Badly scripted channel five mid-afternoon tv movie drama lets this film down and only the actualy parts of the exorcism make up for i,. With its terrific turn (quite literally) from jenny carpenter who plays emily the whole 'horror' parts play out like some drug induced seventies slasher and genuinly gripped me but didnt make me 'jump' So to sum up watch this for laura linneys beaten down, loner, heavy drinking character with remarkebly amazing hair for a for such circumstances (perhaps it got possessed with the demon of vidal sassoon) watch for carpenters performance and watch for campbell scotts moustache and for tom wilkinson wishing he had a better script to read. ..not bad though

Films ok, sounds and picture upgrade from dvd

Gregory Brys from Staffordshire, England, 8th June, 2007

The film itself suffers from the same afflictions as most horror movies. It tries to tell you whats meant to be scary with big bangs and gore. The best horrors dont actually show you and let you use your imagination. However in terms of its blue ray performance its a major improvement. With its 5.1 PCM lossless audio the film really comes alive, whilst picture especially in darkest scenes hold up really well (which is great seeing as most of the film is shot at night). If you enjoyed the film and have the equipent to enjoy it in HD i'd highly recommend seeing it again. You'll hear and see things you never thought were there

Great Horror

A Customer from Turriff, Scotland, 13th August, 2008

Best horror I have seen for ages. No blood and guts for shock value here. Just great suspence and some real hide behind the cushion moments. The fact that it is based on a real court case just makes it better. Looks great on Blu-Ray too.

Scary

A Customer from London, 16th February, 2008

There is more emphasis on court room drama than horror film, but nonetheless, this is a pretty scary film to watch by yourself... mainly because it's based on a true story! Very good.
