Packs a Punch

carlosreddevil from , 16th March, 2007

Breaking conventional rules, Shadowboxer is dark, sexy, and very violent. On many levels the movie is uncomfortable to watch. All of the characters are flawed and the brazen sexuality and raw emotional performances, by a superb cast, is hard to watch at times. This is no popcorn movie but a thesis on age, sex, family, and violence. The direction was a little heavy handed, and in some scenes, it overshadowed the actors. Expect to see more in the future from Mo'nique in her break out role; and Macy Gray, as usual, was entertaining to watch. Cuba Gooding Jr, looking not much older than he was in the 'Show me the money' days in his Oscar winning performance in Jerry Maguire, is superb. In fact, I think that his is an important role in the history of film. A black man as an object of sexual desire by an older white woman certainly breaks the norms. Their intimate relationship will test your own beliefs on age and race. But by the time you figure out where you stand, another scene will give you reason to pause and think. And I guess that's what I like most about the film--being forced to confront issues I rarely think about and being entertained at the same time.

Poor, poor film

A Customer from Chippenham, Wiltshire, 11th May, 2007

The relationship between Mirren and Gooding just does not work. It seems awkward and forced, and there is no chemistry. Mirren's character has one pivotal moment in the film, and apart from that her departure does nothing to the story. I would not advise renting this film...it just does not work.

avoid

A Customer from Maidenhead, 11th May, 2007

This film is just plain rubbish. There is just nothing to recommend about this. Plot is poor, chemistry is non-existent, action scenes boring and the comedy moments (i saw at least one!) were cringe worthy. Switched it off after a hour. Would of done it sooner but just was desperate to see if it got better later on. I am a fan of macy gray as well but she plays such a annoying character that ... well i wont spoil what happens, needless to say i breathed a sigh of relief when it did! Avoid at all costs.

Strange film

A Customer from England, 29th May, 2007

This film was very different to what I expected, I thought due to a well known cast this would be a good thriller, it was arty, grpahic and had some strange storey lines, like Helen Mirren being Cuba's step mom and then became he's lover????

Poor

SimoneJ from , 5th February, 2010

In fact its worse than poor.. its crap... no beyond crap... hold on wait a minute... imagine the worse film you have watched... multiply it by 1000 and then multiply it again. Cuba and Helen are an odd couple.. Helen's acting is the worse I have ever seen. I just dont get why this movie was made. And to think I wasted my free trial on this crap!

bizarre (not in a good way)

Preston from , 3rd January, 2010

With a cast like this you'd expect a good story, good direction, a good twist, or at least a good soundtrack....instead you get a made for TV movie with a lot of uncomfortable sex scenes thrown in and cheesy acting. I really couldn't believe how bad some of the scenes were and eventually had to turn the movie off. Amazing a movie like this was given the go-ahead. Don't bother with this one.
