A movie based on a PowerPoint presentation by a former presidential candidate may not sound exciting, but once AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH hits its stride viewers may be surprised how compelling the subject matter proves to be. While many high-ranking political figures continue to argue about global warming, Al Gore has plunged headlong into a serious wake-up call for the planet with a series of lectures about the problem. It's on one of these lectures that this movie from director Davis Guggenheim is based. Guggenheim breaks up Gore's delivery by illustrating his points with film footage, much of which features the former Democratic nominee exploring the globe as he examines the effects of global warming. Gore's speech is neatly divided between calm recitations of the facts about the issue and several stories of a personal nature. His skills as an orator are considerable, and it's hard not to be alarmed by most of what he has to say. Indeed, as Gore relates tales of melting polar icecaps, rising global temperatures, and the reluctance of political leaders to do something about the problem, the film takes on an air of hopelessness and doom, especially as no easy solutions are offered. Gore's advice is for individuals to take steps to reduce their own inadvertent poisoning of the atmosphere, and to persuade others to do likewise. It's a powerful message, and one that is likely to remain in non-cynical minds long after the film comes to a conclusion.

An Inconvenient Truth - Global warming isn't man-made

A Customer from Oxford University, UK., 13th March, 2007

Absolute rubbish! The world's climate is not changing from higher CO2 concentrations. The ice-core graph he uses is false - the climate got much hotter 800 yrs before CO2 levels increased, i.e. there is a 800 yr lag which he doesn't mention. This means CO2 is an effect of global warming, not the cause. The sun's solar flares/activity are a much more logical explanation (which we cannot control at all!) and recent graphical data fits amazingly with temperature vs solay activity. Simply put - Sun heats Earth; oceans temp rise slowly (800 years) thereby releasing CO2 (previously dissolved into the ocean); sun activity decreases; Earth cools; oceans cool (over similar timescale) and dissolve atmospheric CO2, thereby decreasing the levels. This film is a propaganda stunt from politicians/environmentalists which use biased scientists with views, NOT facts. Global warming scientists have a big agenda: to promote human-made global warming and thereby get more funding/grants from government. Global warming is happening (warming and cooling has happened for thousands of years) but the fact that it is portrayed as Human-Made global warming is a great reason for increasing taxes on flights/cars and also denying the 3rd world countries to use all their resources on 'green' grounds. It's all politics. As a scientist myself I find this film inaccurate and biased in the way it portrays the new religion of human-made global warming. It is both arrogant to think that humans can effect global warming and at the same time prevent it. I think the only inconvenient truth here is that Al Gore, God forbit, might actually be wrong!

IMPORTANT and entertaining

lee newham from London, 7th November, 2006

This is a documentary. So be prepared to learn something. BE prepared to learn something important. IT Will change your outlook on the enviroment and it will help you on those after dinner chats with friends to defend your pro enviromental stance. Often funny, always informative and rather inspiring, this film WILL lead you to making a difference, however small towards the future of our planet. Tell your friends, get everyone to watch it. And watch the end credits. Wht a shame Al Gore didn't become president. How diferent the world would be now.

Al Gore scores with this...

PaulaWestwood from , 28th December, 2006

You could forgive Al Gore if he was to make this film a political rant against the opposition, having had the misfurtune of having the presidency 'stolen' from him by Bush. However this is by no means a political ego trip, this makes absolute sense and should make you sit up and take notice. It is an important piece of info-mentary film, put forward by an important figure in a very informative way. Look, I am no green or eco-warrior, but this is a must watch for anyone that gives a damn about the world we currently inhabit and give scant regard for. Give it a watch.

Definately worth watching

JP Film Buff from England, 17th January, 2007

As someone who works in the 'industry' I already knew a lot about climate change, yet this film still presented me with some new facts and predictions. I thought Gore struck a good balance between his public and personal life, with some interesting insights into his motivation for this subject. I didn't see it as a presidential campaign, but if he does decide to run, I think America can count themselves lucky indeed.

Life changing

A Customer from Cheltenham, 1st March, 2010

Al Gore is a great narrator of this story about increasing carbon emissions and global temberature increases. The message is strongly supported by the science but is easy to digest as it is presented in a number of different ways to make easy watching. (I promise it is not too heavy) This film fully explores the link between global warming and its implications..... such as plunging Europe into a 1000 year long ice age (counter- intuitive I know but it happened before and it only takes 10 years to go from the temperature today to an ice age.) However the narrator is pragmatic which meant that this did not come off as scare-mongering. I was left with hope but I do think that this should be compulsary watching for everyone.

in the middle of the latest snowy weather ....

hanvic from , 23rd February, 2010

someone sent me an email pic of a traffic hold up on the motorway of cars and motorists stranded in the snow with bubbles emanating from the cars saying what do we want, global warming, when do we want it now

and that is how i feel about this topic. it is more about do gooders trying to tell us how to behave i often feel. we have always had climate and some people have gotten onto the academic and consultancy gravy train i dont deny that overall climate is getting warmer on a global level but to me the jury is out whether this all manmade. i think some of it is but it will be dwindling reserves of fossil fuels and market forces that will spur innovative scientific break throughs rather than altruism. thats the way capitalism works.
