This is terrible

Wildcat from Leics, 2nd March, 2004

I basically rented this because I think Viggo Mortensen is a bit of a fox - I've now learned my lesson that this is not a good enough reason to rent a film. This is terrible; and not in a 'so bad it's good' kind of a way. The only good to come from me watching this film is to be able to tell other people not to.

Well Worth Seeing

A Customer from Salisbury, England, 2nd February, 2005

Viggo Mortensen aside (who, yes, is wonderful), this film is very watchable. The cinematography is imaginative and captures this passionate martial Japanese society. The action is well done, and the plot credible. Coming back to Viggo Mortensen (and why not), he really shows the quiet intensity of his acting in this movie. He is utterly compelling and very convincing as the undercover FBI agent who becomes seduced by the people he is infiltrating. Any fan of Viggo should definitely get this film; fans of a solid thriller should give it a go too.

American Yakuza..

If you are a fan of the gorgeous Viggo you will not be disapointed.
The story isn't too bad, if a little predictable.
I quite enjoyed it but it will never win an academy award with regards to the acting!
However, if you are looking for a film that isn't too taxing on the brain then this is the film for you.

American Yukkusa

OK....So we are supposed to believe a highly trained CIA operative who we are seen blowing people away and threatening to beat people to a plup in the initial reels actually turns out not to be this hard killing machine? Viggo Mortensen suddenly turns into this over sentimental emotional drip crying all over people he was sent into bring to justice because someone killed them first? Im sorry but the only emotions that highly trained govenment agents would express are anger, rage and arrogance! Not doing a Gyneth Paltrow all over the place! So the Japanese as good guys because they have honour when they are chopping peoples heads off and generally reeking bloody mahem???? The Americans are bad guys because they massacre people without honour and a bad attitude? We are asked to believe that the CIA get the MOB to get rid of the Janaese Mafia because its too much like hard work for them to deal with???? PLEASE!!!!! This was utter nonense! Someone tell Viggo Mortensen to wipe his nose and pull himsef together!!!!! Get a Grip!!!

Watchable enough

JimiTheSaint from , 24th August, 2009

But somewhat cliched and unbelievable... I think Satan would be skating to work before the Yakuza let a normal white amercian into their ranks, let alone one they'd just met, no matter what he had done... It's portrayal of one type of gangster being 'more noble' than any other type also leaves a bad taste.
