Not your usual Rom Com! A must see!

A Customer from North London, 22nd July, 2006

This is NOT your typical rom com, and anyone that says this movie is a waste of time completely missed the point of the film! One of the better films Aniston has starred in (and I am NOT saying this because of her infamous naked scene)which says alot because besides 'Friends' Aniston hasn't really done any outstanding or even memorable films. The film touches subtly on the dynamics between male /female relationships and the problems that ensue. I liked the end, it wasn't your usual happy- ever-after-typical-Hollywood-ending. It made a very distinctive point: sometimes a man can have a great thing going with a woman, but he doesn't realise it at the time, when he finally does come around to appreciating what he had, he has lost it and her for good!A film you can really get your teeth into, although I think it's the kind of film the girls could go and see: there's a few laughs and tears along the way. Well worth seeing!

Not a Romantic Comedy

Carrie Stewart from London, England, 28th February, 2007

I found this painful to watch at times, not because it is a bad film, it's not, it's actually quite a good film, no matter what a lot of reviewers out there have said. It's just not a romantic comedy, and has few funny moments in it (though there are some). For me it is more a drama, and watching two people who love each other find ways to hurt one another wasn't all that much fun. It was sad, but had quite a nice ending at least. I thought both leads were enjoyable, but I did feel more of a sympathy towards Aniston's character, though found it difficult to see how they had fallen in love in the first place, when they were so mismatched. I guess that's why they say opposites attract. Don't watch expecting belly laughs and you should enjoy.

every couple can relate

A Customer from wrexham, n wales, 26th May, 2007

i watched it with the wife and it really is a chick flick the bloke doesnt really come out looking good when shes washing up hes watching baseball or playing on his game console so as a man i kinda relate to that and just for a milisecond begin to think i should do more then im ok again an average film afew laughs along the way a man would see his point and a woman hers so a good discussion after followed by silence if you did watch this but as a film watch it but you would never watch it again this film does have a good cast though i would put it in your medium list.

A painful waste of time - avoid

BarnsleyFan from , 28th February, 2010

Right - first off, this is billed as 'romantic comedy'. Let me set this straight. It isn't romantic, and it isn't funny. If you sincerely enjoy watching a couple argue - this is the film for you. I didn't laugh once - it's all too predictable. Some other reviewer from North London has suggested that there are tears and laughs along the way - hell no! This film does not solicit any emotional involvement from the viewer. The characters are two dimensional and painfully thin. I didn't feel like laughing at any time, and to be honest, I couldn't begin to care enough to raise a tear. There is nothing original here. Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus etc etc etc. He wants a pool table and to play his video games, she wants him to want to do something for her. YAWN. She walks through the house naked to show him what he's missing. He has a strip poker party with his mates and a load of hot women. You get the idea. Somehow the fun gets sucked out of the whole thing because it's just a bad romantic drama, it takes itself far too seriously. Get 'War of the Roses' instead - it works on the same idea, but honestly, it will make you laugh because it's funnier, sexier, and has a better cast. It has stood the test of time, which by the way, this film ('The Break-Up') won't (it really won't - it's incredibly forgettable). If you like Vince Vaughn (and generally I find him entertaining) get 'The Wedding Crashers', 'Dodge Ball', or 'Old School'. If you like Jennifer Aniston you've been watching too much 'Friends' and you've never seen her on the big screen. She's Hollywood cryptonite.

Funny and clever

Billypinky from , 28th February, 2010

One of the few romcom/chick flicks that doesn't treat the audience like idiots. Jennifer Aniston character isn't some dumb blonde and Vince Vaughn character doesn't fart at every opportunity. It a breath of fresh air not to be shown another blue collar guy acting like a total baboon. Watching this couples relationship unraveling is a bitter sweet tale so don't be expecting slapstick.

The Break Up

ToastedSesame from , 5th February, 2010

I rented this because I'd seen the first hour on tv so many times but never got to see how it panned out and ended. Am pleased I rented it and it wasn't as predictable as one would've thought. Very good film.

Waste of rental

A Customer from Edinburgh, 28th January, 2010

Why did I rent this film? It started entertainingly enough, with Gary charming Brooke, and their relationship getting off to a storming start. Then they argue... and their relationship falls apart. Their friends and family watch and try to help, but they seemed doomed to failure. You keep waiting for them to have some flash of realisation and suddenly make up - until the 'six months later' final scene when they're with new other halves. So what is entertaining about that, that this deserves to be a Rom-Com? If you like analysing relationship breakdowns, you may find this interesting. However, if you're looking for a Happy Ever After, look elsewhere!
