When forbidden love tears a tightly knit Indian family apart, a mother's heartbreak prompts her son to reunite the shattered clan in this family drama from filmmaker Karan Johar. Business tycoon Yashovardhan Raichand (Amitabh Bachchan) has everything a man could ever want: a loving family, a thriving empire, and a beautiful wife. When Yashovardhan's son Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) discovers that he is adopted, he expresses his gratitude through unwavering devotion and unending loyalty until the day that he falls in love with a boisterous young outcast named Anjali (Kajol). Disowned by his father and left to his own devices, Rahul gathers Anjali and her young sister, Pooja (Kareena Kapoor), and sets his sights on London. As the grief of Rahul's mother becomes too much to bear, Rahul's brother Rohan sets out to find his brother and reunite their fragmented family.~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Writer/director Karan Johar confirms the promise of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai with an intense family saga brought to life by some of Bollywood's biggest stars. Hrithik Roshan travels to London in the hope of uniting adopted sibling Shah Rukh Khan with Amitabh Bachchan, the proud father who disowned his youngest son after he married a chatty Punjabi shop owner, played by Kajol. With Jaya Bachchan piling on the piety as Amitabh's wife and Kareena Kapoor providing light relief as Kajol's mischievous sister, there are several shifts in mood and plenty of memorable musical moments. Thankfully the overriding emphasis on barnstorming melodrama also means there are few longueurs in a movie with such an epic running time.

Not memorable

Hibiscus from Surrey, 13th March, 2005

This film laboured on……..and on. I was not bowled over by the music however some of the landscape scenes were beautiful. The story line seemed silly and in the end, not worth the wait and the thunder used to punctuate any strong words became laughable.

I did not particulary warm to the characters and for many reasons, the actress Kajol, annoys me in any film with her over the top, contorted expressions; over emphasised, jarring movements and shouting. Thank goodness Shah Rukh Khan can hold up any film and Amitabh Bachchan has great on screen presence. It is watchable but not memorable.

More of the same...

Professor Babulal from UK, 5th March, 2005

Yet another sickly sweet bollywood movie from Karan Johar. The film is so glossy and sugar coated it's difficult to watch it all the way through without vomiting. Shah Rukh does his usual baboon impressions throughout the movie, but for once he's not the most annoying character - he has a new rival in Kareena Kapoor, who manages the difficult feat of being even worse at acting than Shah Rukh. It's all far too long at over three hours, with virtually nothing happening. Good performances by Amitabh and Hrithick can't save this mess. One for screaming teenage Shah Rukh fans and broody maternal females only - everyone else stay away!

One to avoid

ChiliPalmer from London, 11th November, 2003

This was the first Bollywood movie I have seen for years having been a real fan in my youth. I was interested to see how the genre had moved with the times. This might sound as if I am taking the p** but the film demonstrated just what rubbish passes for Bollywood film making these days. Feeble dialogue, no dramatic tension, lacking in clever humour and even by Bollywood standards a huge overload of sentimentality. Avoid it like the plague.

A beautiful cast

Az123 from London, 18th January, 2004

I'll admit, this was one of my fave Bollywood films I had ever seen. Drenched in luxurious locations and colours, this story of a family torn apart by love, pride and stern tradition is a real treat for the jaded American palate.

It takes a while to willingly accept the cultural differences in plot and motivation but by the end of this movie you might find yourself getting teary-eyed too over the family's anguish.

Filled with lavish song and dance numbers, a beautiful cast (men and women alike).

if you love your Bollywood with great songs, a tearjerking middle and great cast then this is the film for you. Absolutely hooked from the first minute. The story revolves around 2 brothers and their domineering father and devoted mother. When the eldest of the 2 boys refuses to marry his childhood friend he is cut off from his family but the yonger brother sets out to reunite him, with delicious heartwarming results.
