Robert Dean (Will Smith) is a labor lawyer who is unknowingly in possession of evidence related to a serious politically motivated crime. Government agents eager to hide their guilt believe that Dean is on to them, and proceed to turn his life upside-down, ruin his reputation, and frame him for various incidents, thanks to the latest in high-tech government surveillance techniques. In an attempt to clear his name and reclaim his life, Dean teams up with the reclusive Brill (Gene Hackman), a former federal employee who has as much high-tech equipment and expertise as the government itself. Hackman's role is an extension of Harry Caul, the character he portrayed in Francis Ford Coppola's brilliant 1974 film, THE CONVERSATION. Smith scores as a man who is desperate to reclaim his identity and prove his innocence. This intense technological thrill-ride from director Tony Scott questions how much access the government should have to the communications of private citizens, and leaves the viewer with the unsettling feeling that Big Brother is definitely watching. Watch for the uncredited appearances of Jason Robards, Seth Green, Tom Sizemore, and Philip Baker Hall.

Radio Times

Expert direction by Tony Scott and a winning central performance by Will Smith give this cracking hi-tech thriller extra edge and appeal. When an incriminating tape revealing the murder of congressman Jason Robards accidentally ends up in Smith's possession, he finds himself relentlessly pursued by corrupt Jon Voight and his posse of electronic trackers, who use spy satellites, transmitters and all manner of undercover gizmos to trace him. The Fugitive meets The Conversation in this dynamically exciting action adventure that's both intriguing and scarily thought-provoking.

This film had a great storyline from start to finish and you never knew what was going to happen next. Will Smith plays a very good part in it and hes funny too by the comments he makes. Its just the ending that just abit strange but apart from this then this is a film that you must see. 4 out 5

Roller Coaster All The Way

G. B. from Cornwall, UK, 8th July, 2004

This film has it all.
The plot was a good mix of power and political intrigue Vs individual freedom, plenty of action and twists as the story unfolds and you are taken along with it. The pace did not let up until the end.
The performances were of the same high standard and Will Smith was great playing the straight role as the Lawyer caught in the middle. As a special bonus - not an alien in sight!

A rollercoaster ride

GoonerDan from , 3rd July, 2009

Awesome... I cant believe i have not seen this film before. The story will keep you in suspense throughout and it opens up all sorts of questions about the Big Brother (no the rubbish tv show) society we live in today. Just how much of this is possible? Will Smith was his usual brilliance with a few funnies thrown in. Get it... Get it now...

Brilliant

A Customer from Norfolk, 30th January, 2009

Even though this film is 11 years old, I would say this is one of my favourite films of all time. It has a great storyline and the plot from start to finish keeps you on your toes. A great film with Will Smith in the lead role.
