Entertainment Weekly

LITTLE FISH unfolds as an urgent sprawl of fractured hopes and casual deception. The actors are terrific, especially Weaving....The revelation, however, is Rowan Woods, a major filmmaker in the making.

Another Fab Aussie Film

Tara from London England, 19th August, 2006

This is a character driven, thoughtful film with beautifully nuanced performances from a talented cast. It's a satisfyingly slow burner of a film where the relationships between the complex characters unravel gradually. A chance also to see Sam Neill looking remarkably like Terry Wogan. Excellent

Tiny Dynamite...

Steve Day from UK, 3rd March, 2007

Phew, just watched Little Fish. One heck of a slice of down-under drama that may be small, but packs like tiny dynamite. Essentially Aussie arthouse, despite the leading lady and presence of one Sam Neill, this won't lift your mood on a Saturday night in - but I don't think that was ever the intention. However, that's not to say that there isn't plenty of light to go with the shade. Little Fish is really nicely shot, in a graceful, controlled, handheld style; with gorgeous ambient moments drifting in between, and some nice grading. Very little in the way of underscore, but all the better to focus attention on the expert cast, and excellent locations. As a snapshot of life away from the usual cliches and language of mainstream movie-dom, Little Fish is evocative, sometimes uncomfortable, but altogether honest, humble, and heroic. Pick your moment, and take a chance - it'll pay you back.

Powerful

A Customer from London, 31st December, 2006

One of the joys of on-line DVD hiring is that you get movies you don't even remember adding - which can be a double edged sword but in this case revealed to be one of the best films I've seen all year. Cate Blanchett plays Tracy an ex-junkie who lives with her Mum(Noni Hazelhurrst) and works in a local video store. She is trying to raise enough money to buy the store but her credit history(she forged credit cards to finance her habit) means no bank will touch her. Her brother Ray is still a small time drug dealer and she helps out Lionel(Hugo Weaving) a one time sports star reduced to a pathetic heroin addict. Ray has only leg - the result of a car crash 4 years before when Tracy's boyfriend Johhny (Johny Ngyen) was driving - he fled to Canada but is back - apparantly a succesful stock-broker.....but all is not what it seems.... Superb performances all round - Blanchett again proves why she is the best in the business - trying to get her life back on track while supporting her friends but in doing so teeters on the brink of fragmentation and Weaving is remarkable - almost unrecognisable with thick gottee beard and receding hairline he plays Lionel as someone who desperatly wants to get clean but isn't brave enough to face the pain. Hazelhurst as the Mum is also very good doing the best she can for her family and Sam Neill has a solid supporting role as the gay drug dealer whom they,in one way or another, have to deal with. Although its set in Sydney it all takes place in Little Saigon, the Vietnamese district which gves an interesting spin on things and another of the films pleasures is hearing all the cast speak in their original accents.... A very powerful and haunting piece and well worth seeking out.

No idea what it was about

Dave K from Birmingham, UK, 28th May, 2007

I didn't really understand what was happening in this film from beginning to end. The dialogue was obscure at times and I never cared what happened to any of the characters. I'm sure the acting was top notch, but it just didn't hold my interest. I'd say it's a waste of time. Not a bad film, necessarily, but not enjoyable or intelligible.

Enjoyable

Jomell from , 12th February, 2010

Very good film, well directed and scripted, well acted, with a super performance by Kate Blanchett which really makes the film. She is totally believable as a rough sincere woman caught in a situation where she has no control.

Little Fish

A Customer from Hitchin, 31st December, 2009

I liked this film. Set in Australia, the lead woman who works in a video shop hopes to set up by herself but her past and present catch up with her. The plot twists and turns as she meets an old boyfriend who promises to help out with her finances turns out to be a drug dealer and suddenly things about her take a big twist especially when her father gets involved. Sit back and watch this unravel before you at a steady pace.

Depressing

A Customer from London, 2nd December, 2009

I generally enjoy quirky, gritty, slightly depressing films so thought this would be right up my street, but it was even too miserable for me!

Hard to follow

A Customer from Oceania, 3rd November, 2009

I thought this was going to be a great movie based on other reviews and also based on the fact that Sam Neill, Cate Blanchett, and Hugo Weaving were in it. But it was a bit dull, and not really very interesting.
