Starring: Anil Kapoor | Rani Mukherjee
Director: Sudhir Mishra
Studio: VENUS/RAINBOW FILMS
Run time: 130 mins
Genres: Indian Cinema
Languages: Hindi
Released: July 03, 2006

Avinash (Anil Kapoor) arrives in the city of chaos in a train named Calcutta Mail. Avinash had great curiosity in his heart while coming to Calcutta but very soon, he realizes that things are not as fine as they seemed. He understands that someone is after him, keeping constant vigil on his every move. And unfortunately, he doesn't know who it is. Avinash lives in a tenement where several other interesting and mysterious characters are around him. Avinash is an absolutely ordinary man who has no super-hero things in him. He comes to Calcutta in search of something. He happens to come across few others while strolling in the streets of the city. Important among these characters are Rima (Rani Mukherjee), a novelist, Sujan Singh (Satish Kaushik), a politician, Ghatak (Saurabh Shukla), inspector Rastogi (Sayaji Shinde) and others. Interestingly, Rima is heading a life that has double identities and Avinash is amused, maybe worried as well, about who this girl actually is.

Promising but faltering!

Kiran Sidhar from London, 30th December, 2006

The film starts off very promisingly. The backdrop of Calcutta, its culture and language are a very endearing part of the film. The slim Rani Mukharji is very attractive part of the film but doesn’t get a chance to contribute very much. The screen time is divided between her and Manisha Koirala, both fine and attractive actresses, but fails to give any depth to their characters. Satish Kaushik gives restrained but fine performance of an ambitious politician who would sacrifice anything for his ambition. Another surprise is cameo appearance of Deven Verma. Such a shame that a fine Bengali actor like him doesn’t get much of a screen time to display his fine talent. Anil Kapoor tries hard but he is starting to look dated as an angry young man struggling against the system and still carry the part with two leading ladies. The performances of all characters are very credible. The soundtrack is also good though the songs seem to interrupt the movie rather than help to move the plot along. I got impatient whenever a song interrupted the flow of the film and were annoying. Perhaps that is what is wrong with the film. Too many characters vying for attention, a plot line that keeps you guessing, the songs that have been added to stretch the film and appeal to all tastes. The ending is a surprise and very different from an average Hindi film but by this time my patience had run out and the only comment I could muster at the end was that it was unnecessarily stretched. However, I do recommend seeing this film as it proves, you can ruin a good thing by over indulgence.

I dont know what to say about this film

A Customer from mid glamorgan, 5th August, 2009

I had thought about watching this film so long. It seemed that it was going to be something different with such an original title as well. Anil Kapoor is trying to save himself from some dada leader. This film is full of one dimensional characters main, reason being that this film is one dimensional. Rani Mukherjee appears to be her own sweet self assured self but then we see that she is a sweet charactered, drama queen who undertakes different persona's to be in character for her book. Now that sounds different and original except this film is executed so ammaturish and has no heart what so ever. It seems to be a mess of a recipe; the best way to describe this is an early nineties film made with a big star cast, where the maker babbles 'This is hatke and so different'. And all the dialogues and the make up of the characters are just totally cliche with not a single part in the film that is impressive and amusing. Rani only takes on one persona and that is of a poor near penniless Chal house girl atually. Its a totally silly film.
