The "sophmore jinx" hit hard for this second film by Kevin Smith, whose debut Clerks transcended the limits of its setting and budget to become memorably funny and a cult classic. (Smith followed Mallrats with the wonderful Chasing Amy, only to be cursed again with the appalling Dogma. Clearly he's settling into the same one-off rhythm that afflicts the Star Trek movies.) A ramshackle comedy set in a mall, Mallrats follows several storylines involving lovers, enemies, friends, goofballs, and Smith's own character "Silent Bob", who also appeared in all the other Smith films. A heavy self-consciousness weighs on everything, as if Smith forgot how to make obscenity funny instead of tedious. Still, it's nice to see some of the director's film family on screen, among them Ben Affleck before he was famous, Jason Lee and Joey Lauren Adams. --Sally Chatsworth

Radio Times

Director Kevin Smith's follow-up to his no-budget independent hit Clerks was this under-rated comic look at pop Americana, junk culture and adolescent angst that gained enormously from the use of a professional cast (Shannen Doherty, Claire Forlani, Ben Affleck et al). Focusing on a pair of slackers mooching around the local shopping mall after being dumped by their girlfriends, Smith's vulgar and consistently amusing diversion is as irreverent and spot-on as its eye-opening predecessor.

Hilarious

Quite simply one of the funniest movies ever made. Mallrats is the second installment of the New Jersey Saga in which is directed by comedic mastermind Kevin Smith. I loved this movie; it's a great element of just having fun and it teaches you that a good movie doesn't have to have a great storyline. The plot is about T.S. Quint (Jason London) and Brodie Bruce (Jason Lee) are best friends and both have girl problems. T.S.'s girlfriend, played by Claire Forlani who is really hot, breaks up with T.S. because he isn't supposedly true to her and Brodie has a girl, who is played by Shannon Doherty, who's had relations with him and is tired of his antics, so she goes out with a preppie, who's name is Shannon Hamilton played by Ben Affleck. So Brodie and T.S. go to the mall to relieve their problems and come to see a wide variety of hilarious characters. For example, Jay and Silent Bob, who is played by Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith himself. These two stoners help T.S. and Brodie win back their girlfriends by pulling out a scheme at a premiere game show being televised at the mall. In this, they pull an interesting way to get back their girlfriends and save the day as the king of the mall.

The movie is hilarious and Brodie Bruce played by Jason Lee is probably the funniest character in the movie, plus all the other people are funny as hell, too. I give this movie an 8 out of 10 because of pure fun, entertainment and comedy.

If you like Mall Rats, you may also wish to hire [Clerks], [Chasing Amy], [Dogma] [Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back].

Snoogan's!!!

A Customer from England, 25th April, 2004

I remember the first time I saw this film, late night showing on BBC2, I absolutely loved it, jay and silent bob became my new hero's.
It has been a long time since that first showing, and I decided to rent it out again to see if it was a s good as I remember, but it wasn't, it just didn't capture me the same as the first time.
It didn't seem quite as funny, some of the lines didn't seem to fit, they sounded like a script from Dawson's Creek.
It still made me laugh, and jay and silent bob are still a master piece.
I would recommend this film to everyone, its a nice feel good film, that still manages to break from the norm.
There are some brilliant set pieces, that will have you laughing out loud, and some great comic performances.
It may not seem as good as I first thought but I still give it 4 stars, so you can see how high I regarded it after my first viewing. I'm still going to buy it, and its still one of my favorite slacker movies.

Comedy Genius

This film is Jason Lee (Earl-My Name is Earl) at his best. Didn't stop laughing. Vastly underated film directed by Kevin Smith aka Silent Bob of Jay and Silent Bob! It has an allstar cast however they are much younger in this, watch if you like Clerks. The basic story invlolves a couple of guys break up with their girlfriends, the mall and the fight to regain their gilfriends.

Mallrats

Funnier than I'd heard, perhaps my viewing of this gained from the fact I was expecting nothing amazing. I was pleasantly surprised. Jason Lee ('My Name is Earl', 'Chasing Amy') makes up for an otherwise rather dull cast (with the exception of Jay and Silent Bob who are at their best). This isn't as good as 'Chasing Amy' and it's nothing like 'Dogma' in the slightest. It's basically 'Clerks' with a bigger budget, and as such it works in my eyes. Worth having a look definitely...

Bong!

SteveBent from , 25th July, 2008

This guy. This unbelievable guy. He makes massive waves with his self financed DIY movie. Becomes one of the hottest names in the industry and has options a plenty for his next move... What does he do? Makes a stoner comedy set in a shopping mall full of superhero jokes and still casts his mates. And it bombs... Mallrats is a folly for sure. It's almost impossible for anyone who isn't a white male born in the late 70's with a bit of a sic fi nerdy past to understand fully. It's chock full of smutty puns and in jokes and plays like a string of wordy skits strung together with Cheech and Chong out takes. And the acting is awful. But don't let that put you off. Mallrats is perfect for repeat viewing. Dense with zingers, huge on dumb clever slapstick and for once frothy light weight fun from the generation that was defined by Slacker. Kevin Smith is a fine writer, a very funny man and a stubborn auteur of his own genre. Chasing Amy has problems with seriousness, Dogma with Action and Jay And Silent Bob with not being Clerks II. Mallrats is in a league of it's own.

Mall rats was Kevin Smith's first film. It is kinda visible but by god that guy can write good movies. This is the same sorta thing as jay + silent bob strike back ,,, you leave your brain at the door and just laugh at the absurd slapstick and crude jokes. Its fantastic!

Great fun, no brainer movie

Jenniferv82 from from Tywyn, 19th March, 2008

This movie had a bad rep when it was released, although, I don't know why? Its great fun! Its full of great one liners, interesting and crude conversations, and Jay and Silent Bob. What more good you want in a movie??? If you are a big fan of Clerks, then you'll enjoy the references and the cameos from Clerks stars. Clue: look at the guys Brodi fights with in the comic book que.

Rubbish, Rubbish, Rubbish

I would like to use stronger words to describe the time I wasted watching this piece of crap. Save yourself the embarassment and give this a wide berth. If you want a laugh hire Laurel & Hardy, Benny Hill or On the Buses any of these titles are a million times better than this piece of excrement. Jay and Silent Bob are about as funny as finding out you have a malignant tumour. I only gave it 1 star because it is not possible to give a zero or minus as this deserves
