Set in 1944 France, an American Intelligence Squad locates a German Platoon wishing to surrender rather than die in Germany's final war offensive. The two groups of men, isolated from the war at present, put aside their differences and spend Christmas together before the surrender plan turns bad and both sides are forced to fight the other.

Underated and often overlooked

Cyfran101 from , 28th January, 2006

In most war films its: the enemy are in those trenches over there, we have been trained to kill the enemy and we have ample reason to kill the enemy. Here in a snowbound forest removed from any clear command a forward post deals with the emotions of the solder, their human instincts and their personal conciences conflicting with their duty and training. This is all brought to the fore when the Germans they make contact with don't seem to have the normal willingness to act as the enemy but are more willing to give themselves up to the Allies instead of being shoved into one final offensive. However the seemingly easy task of taking these prisoners prooves much tougher through the mutual mistrust from years fighting and the indoctrination boths sides have been subject to from their countries. The action is well played throughout although you are always aware its not going to have happy ending. This film should always be in the the top fifty all time war films but is often overlooked.

One of the best war films.

Top-notch anti-war drama, about a squad of young American GI's (led by Ethan Hawke) on a mission in the Ardennes forest near the end of WW2. Refreshingly unhurried film is filled with insight, Irony, and eloquence. Extremely well acted and directed. Director Keith Gordon also scripted; from William Wharton's novel.

For a war film, this is very good!!

Why does no one know about this film? It is the best war film I have ever seen and one of the few films I can watch more than a handful of times. The acting is superb and the storyline unfolds well. Watch this film!
