1940 France. A British Corporal is forced to take responsibility for the lives of his men when their officer is killed in battle. The troops are boxed in and he has to get them back to Britain somehow. Meanwhile, British civilians are recruited into the British war effort with Operation Dynamo, the secretive mission to evacuate 338,226 French and British troops from the beaches of Dunkirk. Leslie Norman skilfully directs this amazing true story of one of the most crucial events of World War II, perfectly capturing the Dunkirk Spirit.

Old cracker

JamesT from from Chorley, 2nd September, 2008

This is a cracking little film from its era. If you like old war films such as 'Went The Day Well' then you must watch this. Typical stoic British resistance while under pressure the favourite piece of mine is when the team come across some Germans at a farm. Seen it a few times and still think it is one of our best old war movies.

Dunkirk

Dunkirk is a good old fashioned war film with obligatory casting of John Mills. It is typical of its time, the effects aren't spectacular but they don't detract from the story. Good use of archive footage. Not enough was made of the 'little boats' in my opinion, but still a good watch.
