This wildly off-beat comedy is about a male dancer (Paul Mercurio) who refuses to follow the accepted rules of ballroom dancing and creates his own style of choreography, which infuriates the ballroom dancing establishment. Before he's scheduled to compete in the Pan-Pacific ballroom championships, he's forced to take up a new partner (Tara Morice), a beginner who initially seems without promise. With his help, she turns into an assured and wonderful dancer. Baz Luhrmann's visual style may be too bright, gaudy and exaggerated for some tastes, yet he treats his characters with compassion, which makes Strictly Ballroom such an engaging comedy.~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Movie Guide

Radio Times

Feel-good movies don't come any better than this Australian smash hit, which is an exuberant joy from sequined start to feathered finish. Come Dancing meets Footloose when rebel ballroom star Paul Mercurio hesitantly teams up with ugly duckling novice Tara Morice for an important contest. He wants to perform his own Latin routine, however, rather than the boring steps set by the conservative dancing federation. Will love be in the air? What do you think! As kitsch and as corny as anything, this hilariously heart-warming romantic comedy drama is the ideal pick-me-up. It's bright, breezy and strictly fabulous.

Strictly brilliant

A brilliant parody of the world of 'comepetition' dancing . From the opening minutes humour is woven with a romance that out dances and provides more real passion than Dirty Dancing ever could. Funny, stylish and entertaining, even the predictable ending inspires, when it could have disappointed. My number one feel good film, whether you are Scott or Fran, watch this with a broad smile and laugh out loud as your eyes fill with tears of joy, and then see Muriel's Wedding.

Brilliant

This film is simply awe inspiring. The simple story, the unknown cast (outside of Australia), the costumes and the soundtrack come together so effortlessly (or so it seems when watching the movie). I can't think of a movie that generates such feeling and energy without verging on the ridiculous.

This is not a chick flick, but be warned i guarantee you will feel warm inside after watching this movie (unless you have a heart of stone).

Strictly Essential

I love the way this director makes his movies. The visuals are great, the comedy hilarious but subtle, the characterisations extreme but believable and the story very well told. The central message in the film isn't about dancing at all, but overcoming fears and reaching out beyond the constraints imposed upon you by your micro-world - be it your boss at work, your peers, school, etc - it's just that the director chose to set this tale in the world of Australian ballroom dancing. So there is a message, but not rammed down your throught like so many moral American films try to do, far more subtle and entertaining than that. I just love the Aussie'ness of the movie. And if you're not tapping your toe with a tear in your eye at the finale then you haven't got a pulse...!

A fantastic film. Don't be put off by it's title. I saw this in the cinema when it was released; it's the only film I've been to where the audience applauded at the end. Definitely worth watching. Doug...... my favorite character!
