After being denied the chance to go to a nearby village to visit a prostitute before starting a reconnaissance mission, a tough, embittered American sergeant (Sean Penn) involves the four men of his patrol in the kidnapping of a young Vietnamese woman. The impending gang rape and murder of the woman splits the patrol into two factions--those for it, and those against it--with young Eriksson (Michael J. Fox) leading the dissension. But before long, the sergeant has convinced everyone but Eriksson to go along with the plan, making an already difficult mission unbearable for the morally conscious young soldier. Penn gives a powerful performance in this brutal, thoughtful war film from a script by playwright David Rabe (HURLYBURLY). In addition to Penn and Fox, this Brian De Palma movie features early screen roles by John C. Reilly, John Leguizamo, and Ving Rhames."

Radio Times

It's not as well known as The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now or Platoon, but this Vietnam War tale is just as disturbing and probably more provocative since its content is far riskier. Directed by Brian De Palma, it has at its centre the fact-based story of a Vietnamese woman who is kidnapped and brutally raped by four GIs. While battle-scarred Sean Penn leads the assault, new recruit Michael J Fox stands back but doesn't help her. The film's compassion for the woman hits us directly, as does the way De Palma sets up the episode by showing the brutalisation of Penn and his colleagues in the preceding scenes. Filmed with all of De Palma's technical bravura, it heads towards an epilogue that reaches an emotional precipice and then leaps confidently over it.

Disturbing but compelling viewing that brings home the true cost of the Vietnam war to both soldiers and civilians alike.

Will move you to tears!

Paul Lloyd from Devon, 18th March, 2005

Amazing film a must see. This is of course about the Nam war and turns it on it's head...This film was so brave as it gave you a view from an Anti USA point of veiw. The film stars Micheal J Fox who 1989 was well know for comic roles and he too took a brave leap of faith as like the SFX could of blown up in his face but he does a great job and had such a range to his acting that he has you sucked right in there along side him! Sean Penn on the other hand did what he did best the tough man act and made the perfect foil to Fox's Amercian Pie! Story is Mid war a worn torn village has one of its girls kidknapped by a troop of Americans who take her to rape her and hold her hostage this causes great conflict between the troop and Fox stands up for what he belives is right and just. Amazing film not one for the family in any way shape or form but as it's based on a true story you do come away thinking of more current affairs wondering! Please get this DVD out a great watch and be prepered to be moved a little. Enjoy.

A Vietnam film with a difference

McClennan from , 23rd April, 2005

Brian De Palma's vietnam film, considered to be one of the films that brings closure to the subject in American cinema I think. The film follows a group of soldiers who kidnap and rape a Vietnamese woman during their tour and asks simple questions around morality. Although the morality of rape is a bit of a no brainer, it is handled very well in the film and it works. The only real let down I felt was that the two lead performances of Penn and Fox weren't really up to the quality of the film. I understand that QT rates this as one of his favourite films of all-time and it is good, just not great.

Casualties of war

Ok, not the newest of films on the block. I first saw this film when it was first released. I enjoyed it then as much as I enjoyed it now. The film is very powerful, the photography is excellent as is the acting, the storyline is very powerful too. Even though I have personally seen this film several times over the years it never fails to to stir the emotions, I can only say to you watch at least once in your life, you will not be the same person after you have seen this movie, Tony

Great performances

carlsob from , 9th November, 2009

An excellent performance from both Michael J Fox & Sean Penn in this Vietnam war movie. Although set in the conflict there isn't that much war action as the movie centres around the drama. The Platoon kidnap a native girl and use her as a sex slave. Michael J Fox however isnt playing along. Good movie, well worth seeing. Also features a young John Leguiziamo and John C Reilly.

Appalling

A Customer from UK, 29th August, 2009

This is a dreadfully written piece of US vanity. The writing is cliche'd as is the set, the directing and the casting. Lots of glory to the flag, the pain of war, and 'we will all pull together' etc etc. Micheal J Fox looks like a 6 year old boy in an overlarge helmet through the whole film and spends most of his time looking into the middle distance contemplating his outraged sense of justice.
